ROW TWO: Jim Doran. Beginning, sub-varsity, and varsity debaters heatedly argued the current proposition- Resolved: That nuclear weapons should be controlled through an international organization. Beginning debaters learned to construct their affirmative and negative cases by searching for useful information and by cataloguing obtained facts. They also learned and practiced the techniques of effective public speaking. These debaters were coached by Mr. McNabb. Sub-varsity debaters guided by Miss McGuigan, improved the basic skills they had learned and mastered as beginners. The successful varsity competitors, Marie Thourson, Mike Blim, Jim Doran, and Bill Doty, were coached by Mr. Voelz. All debaters spent many hours in prep- aration and practice for the Suburban Interstate Debate League and the National Forensics League tournaments. Marie Thourson and Mike Blim ranked fifth in the state at the N.F.L. tournament at Northern Illinois University, while Jim Doran and Bill Doty placed twelfth. All four varsity debaters ap- peared on CBS's television debate show, Rebuttal. BEGINNING DEBATE. FRONT ROW: Cameron Nelson, Dan O'Keefe, Ken Fisher, Dan Jackson, Bill Reimann. Zander, Marty Chakoian, John Teilsch. ROW THREE: Miss Hurchik, Diane Paulis, Joanne Woodcock, Karen Hansen, Judy Jenkins, Bonnie Kiiak, Ken Zaleski, Carol Cochrane. Variety, excitement, and money characterized activities of the 1964-1965 Russian Club. For variety, President Marty Chako- ian, Vice-president Neil Rowe, and Secretary-treasurer Bonnie Kiiak, as well as the other members of the club, sponsored guest speakers, viewed Russian films, and studied customs of the Russians. Ot special interest for members was a Christmas party featuring a combo and a Russian favorite-Borsch. Boast- ing the largest treasury of any club at Prospect, Miss Hurchik's group could well be proud of its achievement. Prospect's Spanish Club members concentrated on improving their general understanding ot the language and the people who speak it. Latin American culture was emphasized to ac- quaint Spanish students vvith the customs and daily life of Prospect's tour exchange students from South America. Inter- ested club members heard talks given by Ralph Thompson, Don Jernberg, and Nancy BischoFl on their summer experiences in Columbia and Argentina. USE OF VOICE ENCOURAGED Getting together to discuss styles of folksinging, sharing chord- ings and arrangements, listening to one another's latest view on current folk singers, and having fun with music were the major purposes of Prospect's newest club, the Folk Music Club. Sponsored by Mrs. Paxton, and headed by President Marsha Romer, Vice-president Ellen Haderly, and Secretary- treasurer Larry Stein, the club met every Thursday to sing folk music and to plan special activities such as hootenanies tor the benetlt and enioyment ot other folk music enthusiasts. Participation in Individual Speech Events was not open to everyone. This activity was not an organized club but a part ot the National Forensics League. In accordance with require- ments for membership in NFL, students had to earn points to loin Individual Speech Events. Members used the school facili- ties to practice for district, sectional, and state contests which were held during the year. Mr. Ronald Sims and Mr. Leo Hundt advised and assisted stuaents in ten events including poetry recitations and prose and play reading. ee pee INDIVIDUAL SPEECH EVENTS.
