l l French culture was absorbed through use of periodicals. The German Club offered its members a fine opportunity to learn more about the German language and German customs. The club's ofhcers, President Marilynn Pahnke, Vice-president Shirley Borg, Secretary-treasurer Bob Lyons, and sponsor, Miss Hudson, planned many interest- ing programs throughout the year. A student who had been to Germany entertained the club with slides of his visit. One meeting was devoted to a discussion of the Penn- sylvania Dutch, an American social group of German descent. The members also planned a Christmas party with German customs and refreshments. During the year club members were taught popular German games. By learning more of the cultural aspects of Germany through the club, students became increasingly interested in the study of language. Texts were used to make realistic displays. EXPERIENCING To promote a deeper understanding of the culture, language, government, and customs of France was the goal of Prospect's French Club this past year. Under the leadership of its sponsors, Mr. Raymond Rice, Miss Patricia Fruin, and Miss Gail Peterson, the French Club planned a Christmas party and a formal dinner and presented a French version of The Gift of the Magi. Students viewed slides of France, listened to French records, and learned French Christmas carols. The forty members were led by ofticers, Robey Pagenkopf, president, Janet Evans, vice-president, and Con- nie Peterson, secretary-treasurer. The French Club provided an en- ioyable introduction to French life for all participating students. Officers consulted magazines for new ideas. During the past year the Latin Club, under the leadership of Mr. Zamzow, succeeded in presenting interesting and educational pro- grams. The club was led by President Carol Snyder, Secretary Carlene Doran, and Treasurer Bob Krysiak. Arrangements were made for many of the club members to attend the Junior Classical League Convention, held at Forest View High School in November. The club also sponsored an annual Christmas banquet. Members met once a month to supplement knowledge about ltaly and the Latin language gained in the classroom. Movies of ancient Rome and of classical architecture were shown to provide background material for more detailed studies of cultural influences on today's world. 52

For variety, President Marty Chako- ian, Vice-president Neil Rowe, and Secretary-treasurer Bonnie Kiiak, as well as the other members of the club, sponsored guest speakers, viewed Russian films, and studied customs of the Russians. Ot special interest for members was a Christmas party featuring a combo and a Russian favorite-Borsch. Boast- ing the largest treasury of any club at Prospect, Miss Hurchik's group could well be proud of its achievement. Prospect's Spanish Club members concentrated on improving their general understanding ot the language and the people who speak it. Latin American culture was emphasized to ac- quaint Spanish students vvith the customs and daily life of Prospect's tour exchange students from South America. Inter- ested club members heard talks given by Ralph Thompson, Don Jernberg, and Nancy BischoFl on their summer experiences in Columbia and Argentina. Spanish teachers, Mr. Curry and Mrs. Bechtel, directed club activities. Ee is Qt? iiH ig5 F!W'3N,,iE?f2f' 'pug A HQ : ' 2:2 ' si ' fi, I ix ii Pri an it lin 1 ii strr ti asf isis is I-.
