Knowing the location of the steering wheel was vital in driver's training. ' N , 28 Operating under the premise that excellent physical condition is a basic requisite for not only peak men- tal efficiency but also a feeling of general well be- ing, Prospect's Physical Education Department strove to provide well-balanced programs of physical ac- tivity designed to instill both individual and team skills. Thus, Prospect students regularly found them- selves engaged in some form of athletic endeavor either in the gym or, weather permitting, outdoors on the playing field. ln addition to the regular physical education program, the department also admin- istered classes in social dancing to freshmen, driver training to sophomores, and first aid and square dancing to seniors. SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE Electricity, metal work, mechanical drawing, and wood-work- ing were basic course divisions of Prospect's Industrial Arts Department. The Department, under the supervision of Mr. William Laymon, oitered more detailed courses for specializa- tion. Mechanical drawing included studies in machine and architectural drawing tor the advanced students. Cabinet making and machine wood-working introduced specialized sub-divisions of the general wood-working course. Electricians studied the arts of cooking in the traditional exchange of classes with the Home Economics Department. The Diversified Occupations Club, part of the Industrial Arts Department pro- vided students with the opportunity to utilize their skills. Students were assigned to counselors on an alphabetical basis rather than by high school class. A new filing system made student aid more rapid and accurate. Returning to Prospect as the college counselor, Mr. Lindemann recommended useful col- lege catalogs, vocational pamphlets, personal visits with representatives, and the library's College View- er, a combination phonograph-proiector.
