Transcribing their own shorthand notes by typewriter was the final task. OF BUSINESS This past year the Business Education Department, managed by Mr. Louis Audi, experienced a transformation. The process of a two-year change in department curriculum was begun. First, the general business course was opened only to fresh- men and sophomores. Office occupancy and actual working experience were gained through special educational facilities. Courses in business law, consumer problems, shorthand, book- keeping, typing, and business English were offered to all in- terested students. In addition, the notehand and social typing course prepared seniors for extensive written work in many college lecture courses. Some students supplemented their regular business education classes by working in the school book store. In the future the business department plans to have a data processing study which would teach skills in- volved in operating IBM machines. The study of shorthand was tricky at first. Timed writings were part of the daily routine. Learning to keep their eyes on the book proved difficult, f it it is rf- ' , 1 as 5- , A v. ' I ' I T l T ii - Y f ' .Q gil! THE POLITICS In the ever-changing world ot today it is important that America's future leaders have a knowledge and understand- ing of government and the relationship of government to oth- er nations ot the world. The goal ot the Social Science De- partment, headed by Miss Volz, was to stimulate interest, knowledge, and appreciation of the social, economic, and political aspects of the world. Discussions about the effects of past lite on present situations increased the meaning of studies in world history, American history, world geography, sociol- ogy, and current history. Junior classes stressed America's eventful past and rapid growth to the present. Through lec- tures, discussions, newspapers, and national magazines, stu- dents in all courses gained an appreciation of our cultural heritage and a greater understanding of the many people who have contributed to this heritage. Panels discussed current events that quickly evolved into history. ,lol ' MR. THOMAS EDWARD SHIRMANG. A' I Sophomore Football Coach, Wres- 2 I' Q as SA tling Coach. University ot Dubuque, B.s. The Art Department ottered Prospect's art students a wide selection ot interesting studies. The first and second year, stu- dents learned and worked with the fundamental art forms, the third and fourth year students had a workshop in which they were permitted to concentrate individually, pursuing par- ticular interests. Regular classes in fine arts appreciation, a study ot history and interpretation ot art and music, and gen- eral art were offered to supplement concentrated study in sculpture, ceramics, textiles, drawing, illustrating, silk screen- ing, painting, printing, iewelry making, and wood working. During the year many of the art students submitted proiects to be iudged in competition. Successful contestants were awarded their prizes at the spring award's assembly. In ad- dition the Art Department, under the direction at Mr. Keith Weiss and Mr. John Knudsen, prepared publicity posters, scenery, and programs for many school functions and activi- ties during the year. While this might look like modern art, it was only the palette.
