THE POLITICS In the ever-changing world ot today it is important that America's future leaders have a knowledge and understand- ing of government and the relationship of government to oth- er nations ot the world. The goal ot the Social Science De- partment, headed by Miss Volz, was to stimulate interest, knowledge, and appreciation of the social, economic, and political aspects of the world. Discussions about the effects of past lite on present situations increased the meaning of studies in world history, American history, world geography, sociol- ogy, and current history. Junior classes stressed America's eventful past and rapid growth to the present. Through lec- tures, discussions, newspapers, and national magazines, stu- dents in all courses gained an appreciation of our cultural heritage and a greater understanding of the many people who have contributed to this heritage. Panels discussed current events that quickly evolved into history. ,lol ' MR. THOMAS EDWARD SHIRMANG. A' I Sophomore Football Coach, Wres- 2 I' Q as SA tling Coach. University ot Dubuque, B.s. COOPERATED TO EDUCATE This year the Mathematics Department, headed by Mr. Edward Spacapan, introduced new teaching methods and materials to students. The science of mathematics contained the maior subiect divisions of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Modern Algebra I, the experimental study ot new number systems, was offered to the freshmen. Sopho- mores studied the more advanced mathematics of modern geometry in a course covering plane geom- etry, solid geometry, and co-ordinated geometry. Juniors continued to examine the basic logic of alge- bra in Advanced Algebra I. The teachers placed a special emphasis on the ability to visualize problems through graphing. Graphing also aided in visualiz- ing the functions of trigonometry. Finally, seniors who participated in the held of mathematics studied Advanced Algebra ll, a modern approach to begin- ning college algebra, In order to complete tour years ot high school math, accelerated seniors specialized in analytic geometry and calculus. Freshmen learned fundamentals of algebra by trial and error. MR, BOYD T. SAUM. Science Department. Slide Rule Club, Conces- sions. Northwestern University, B.S. MRS. ELLEN K. SMITH. Mu Alpha Theta. Transcribing their own shorthand notes by typewriter was the final task. OF BUSINESS This past year the Business Education Department, managed by Mr. Louis Audi, experienced a transformation. The process of a two-year change in department curriculum was begun. First, the general business course was opened only to fresh- men and sophomores. Office occupancy and actual working experience were gained through special educational facilities. Courses in business law, consumer problems, shorthand, book- keeping, typing, and business English were offered to all in- terested students. In addition, the notehand and social typing course prepared seniors for extensive written work in many college lecture courses. Some students supplemented their regular business education classes by working in the school book store. In the future the business department plans to have a data processing study which would teach skills in- volved in operating IBM machines. The study of shorthand was tricky at first. Timed writings were part of the daily routine. Learning to keep their eyes on the book proved difficult, f it it is rf- ' , 1 as 5- , A v. ' I ' I T l T ii - Y f ' .Q gil!
