Un- der his direction each level prepared students for future years ot study. Freshmen received a general background in gram- mar skills and literature. Sophomores specialized with ci se- mester of speech and a semester ot grammar and literature. Concentration in specific areas ot American literature and ex- pository writing was the goal of junior classes. Seniors studied world literature and wrote an essay each week in prepara- tion tor college writing courses. Honors classes gave the above-average student an opportunity to learn more at a taster pace. A special emphasis was placed on reading good literature and writing documented essays. The developmental reading lab, directed by Mrs, Stern, encouraged students to voluntarily come in during a study hall or eighth hour and advance their reading rate and comprehension. l Tapes were available to aid students in translation. UNDERSTANDING Oral participation was a 'must' in all foreign language classes. Foreign publications created a new interest in the foreign languages. OTHERS Something old, something new, something borrowed . . . This well-known saying appropriately described the Language De- partment at Prospect. Miss Donna Volz once again headed the department in another successful year of promoting in- creased interest in the language clubs and encouraging con- tinually high standards ot achievement in language classes. Two Spanish students enjoyed new experiences and gained practical knowledge by participating in the program ot sum- mer exchange with South American countries. Borrowing a teaching method from the Spanish section of the department, the audio-lingual approach to teaching a foreign language was extended to French classes. Next year beginning German students will be instructed by this new method. The depart- ment onticipates future years when Prospect may have four in- dividual language labs to facilitate the need of fluent speech in language. MRS. MEREDITH L. BECHTEL. Spanish Club.
