Un- der his direction each level prepared students for future years ot study. Freshmen received a general background in gram- mar skills and literature. Sophomores specialized with ci se- mester of speech and a semester ot grammar and literature. Concentration in specific areas ot American literature and ex- pository writing was the goal of junior classes. Seniors studied world literature and wrote an essay each week in prepara- tion tor college writing courses. Honors classes gave the above-average student an opportunity to learn more at a taster pace. A special emphasis was placed on reading good literature and writing documented essays. The developmental reading lab, directed by Mrs, Stern, encouraged students to voluntarily come in during a study hall or eighth hour and advance their reading rate and comprehension.
