During the past four years of high school you have been growing up in the quiet, orderly, democratic world of high school liie. Your interests in the events in the world out oi school have varied with your own individual tastes, backgrounds, intellectual and emotional interests. Now you move out into that greater world. These past iour years have been difficult years, significant years. tragic years: they saw the end oi a great world conliict and the unavailing eilorts to establish a peace that now seems lilce a faraway dream. The years ahead look troubled. Throughout the world now, men are loclced in a confused and mighty struggle between conflicting ideas, between greed and magnanimity, ignorance and enlightenment, fear and courage, suspicion and trust, hatred and love, enslavement and freedom. it is in this world you will live and worlc. Certainly you will ot necessity line yourselves up on one side or the other oi a titanic struggle. May you have the wisdom and the courage to support the great positive, spiritual iorces. Live up to your ideals. However, to translate these ideals into right actions will talce a deal of thinlcing, oi believing, of lcnowing: it will mean a life-long accent on growing. Therefore, in these serious days that lie ahead, my hope for you is that you continue your training of mind and heart. You have not reached the end of education, every day you live will challenge you to the use of all that you have learned in high school and will demand increased and ever increasing abilities. I hope that you have established a learning habit and that you will not relax in your standards. Keep them high: insist always upon good taste, critical judgment, informed opinion. Your possession of these attributes will lift the quality oi whatever group you may be part oi. Your personal attitudes and tastes, your individual actions are, and always will be, deeply significant in the events oi the future. Act always as ii what you do will determine the course of the future, for indeed it will do just that. l lmow that your youth will malce you courageous and strong, that your dreams of justice and truth can be realized. Seelc for the strength that will malce possible right choices, and pray for the wisdom and the ability to see these through to accomplishment. As graduates oi a great public high school this is your responsibility, this is your challenge. We at Prospect Heights High School hope that you will actively participate in the establishing and in the maintaining oi a truly free, creative society of strong and good men and women. Xw A haunting song, an ocean's requiem, ,,,,' I WAS A BRIDESMAID by Diana Yesdanian At first I thought that my brother was playing one oi his corny jokes, but when I got him to say UHonest,H l lmew that it had to be true. 1 could hardly listen when l made Mother tell me all about it, not letting her slcip a word. I was so excited and thrilled when l tound out that l was going to be a bridesmaid at my cousin's wedding. I had a million questions to aslc, the answer to which was usually, ul don't lcnowf' I couldn't sleep that night because there was so much to thinic about. What color would the gowns be? Who were the other bridesmaids? Most important of ali, who would be my usher? Morning came at iast, a truly beautiful morning, and tor the first time in my nine and a halt years ot education, I was dying to go to school to tell the girls the big news. By the end of the day, I had my best friend Anna, praying that the big day would roll around soon. The day for the gown fittings came at last, and did i teel grown up and important, going to meet the bridesmaids in Manhattan, to have dinner and a dress fitting! When the woman brought out the gowns, there was a chorus ot Oh, and Ah, how beautiful. They were ot aqua tafteta, cut very full, strapless, with a scaliopped edging. There was a lovely matching cape to wear over the shoulders. The color had been selected because it was becoming to all of us, with our darlc hair and eyes. The minute I went home I raced to my room to try on my gown. The reaction of the family was just about what l expected, very satisfactory if you lcnow my tollcs. There was a good deal ot admiration and many practical questions. My mother loolced at the hem and the seams to see whether the dress could grow both ways in case I got taller or had too many ice cream sodas. She twisted and turned me around until I was dizzy. My father frowned in that way that doesn't tool us much, and said, How much?n it he mentions money or the price ot something, we lmow that he lilies it. Then the genius ot the family, my brother, gave out with, HDO you loolc lilce a dripin I couldn't kill him with my mother and father right there, so I just told him to disinfect himself. We sneered at each other just for appearances, but he was really impressed. My father tool: me to Calvary Church to the rehearsal. it had never occurred to me to be scared, until i saw with a shoclc the length of the church aisle, and the number of people, even at the rehearsal. i was introduced to the one bridesmaid whom I had not met, and to my usher's brother. So tar, so good. Bridesmaids, usheris brother, but not my usher. With a mixture of disappointment and relief, i found out that he would 7 not he available until the day ot the wedding. l liked the loolcs ot his handsome tmrother, a triple cross hetween Glenn Ford, Robert Ryan, and Peter Lawtord. The organist, too, was very handsome, hlonde-haired, lair-skinned. I couldn't decide whether to marry him or my usher's hrother. When the organ hegan playing, l found that l could get through everything all right. ln the ice cream parlor atterward, we even made a a tew jolces about one another. It was tun sitting there with all those hig girls. They told me that it l had a second dish ot ice cream that I wouldn't tit into my dress. There was a round ot festivities, a shower tor my cousin, a lovely gitt tor each bridesmaid, Queen Victoria pearls, all lcinds ot advice from my family and friends. One lively girl in my class said, When you tall on your tace atter tripping down the aisle, dontt loolc embarrassed when you piclc yourself up. I didnyt tell the people at the tmeauty parlor that it was the first time in my lite that I had had my hair done professionally. l thinlc that the ladies lcnew that it was, tor l was rather scared and they lcept looking at me. At last I was at my auntys house on the clay ot the wedding. lt loolced like a department store at Christmas time. Everybody was running around, bridesmaids, tlorists, photographers, all the people that malce up a wedding. Upstairs, it was even worse. The loride was paclcing, and everybody was trying to help her, hut maliing things worse. ln another room was my uncle, having ditticulty with the how tie tor his tuxedo shirt. In the hall was my aunt, wearing a heautitul tmlue gown, hut having an argument with my cousins who wanted her to wear more lipsticlc. I lost my mother in the confusion. l just had to have her tix the crown ot iiowers that helonged on my hair. l'm not usually a vain person, hut I couldn,t help staring into the mirror and admiring all my tinery. The photographer was hurrying us because the wedding cars had arrived. Vvhen we reached the church, most ot the guests were in their pews. As we were lining up in the vestihule, a hoy in uniform came over with his brother. My ushert I thought that his lorother was handsome, hut my usher was like something straight trom Hollywood. We said a tew words to the hride Whose happy eyes made her loolc more beautiful than ever. The chords ot Lohengrin sounded through the church. The actual cere- mony was just a tmlur to me. It wasn,t until we were at the Forest Hills lnn enjoying the reception that l relaxed. There we all were, teasting and wishing the hride and groom happiness. And my usher came over to me to have the last dance. 8 49 THE FRIENDS by Lillian Billson flyer llie rolling liills lliey ran: Cl .gxs Down in llle meadows lliey plnye 1 fDver llle sunlil lielcls tliey rompecl: lnlo llle woocls tliey slrayecl. I suppose that my big brother Bob, who is seventeen and a senior at Bridgewater High, had a good deal to do with the fact that Dad has had to change his mind about a few things. I'Il have to tell you why. Dad always used to tease Bob about his short memory, in a good- natured way, for the most part. He drew some comparisons between his own very fine memory and his sonys. You can guess who benefited by the comparisonl Dad always claimed that he could remember the face of any person to whom he had been introduced. Bob and I used to sit by patiently and wonder. Vvell, one day, Bill Brown, Dads old college chum, wrote telling us that he would be in town for a few days for a long promised visit. Dad was so delighted that he was walking on air. HVVait until he sees my fine familyf, We overheard him telling Mother, HVVait until he sees this nice house and those two grand kids. Thereys one thing that you can count on with Dad. If he gives you any compliments, it won't be while you,re around, but behind your back he does a good deal of bragging. It was just Dads luclc to have a very important business appoint- ment at the time that Mr. Brown,s train was clue to arrive. Very clubiously, since there was no one else to send, Dad agreed to let Bob meet the train, but not without a million instructions. Getting out his old college yearboolc, he showed Bob an ancient picture of his friend and had a tallc with him. 'SNOW Bobf' Dad began, look at this picture carefully. But Dad, after eighteen years, donlt you thinlc that he'll look lcincl ol? different? Not the face. Look at the face. Study it. Analyze it. Now if I saw a face, really concentrated on it, Fd have no difficulty in recognizing the person, even if it were a century laterf' HA century, Dad? You'cl lcnow a person after a century? VVouldn't hebed .... U UA manner of spealcing naturally. As I was saying, loolc at the face. Youyre so forgetful. If you were more like me, lycl have no need to worry, 10 J 1 x fl because l can remember any face. lt's nothing that l wish to brag a out . . . just a gift, Even il you never study another tace in your lite, loolc at this one and try to remember it no need for worry. He's really a reliable kid, or means to be, and he met Mr. Brown and tool: him home. Now if Dad had had the right lcind of confidence in Bob, everything would have gone all right, but did Dad trust my brother? No. You really can't blame Dad too much, for there were a few bad experiences that had been caused by Bob's forgetlulness, 'V V :KG MXN: 'J .J J Z , 22 ,Q If K 1 f GX lqlff 4 7.1 ff ,I I'-NX f 4 X NX . 4 - , S1 Bob tried to reassure Dad that he would be there and that there was Q f like that time when he was supposed to get Dad,s dress suit from the tailor the night that they were having the big banquet in his honor. Dad arrived at the station just as the train was pulling in. He rushed up to the man with the bulging suitcase who was getting off the end train on the rear platform and walking eagerly in his direction. l gathered later that Dad had made some fraternity sign to him,-he'll never do it for us-'says that hels not supposed to-something like putting his loot into his mouth, my mother says,-and they fell into each other's arms. Why, Bill, how are you, man?U he cried, giving him a hearty slap on the baclc. The man, who proved later to be Bill Johnson, a traveling salesman whose suitcase was lined with brushes, was glad to be united with some- one whom he was supposed to lcnow. He wasn't going to show that he had forgotten an old fraternity brother, and it was easy since his forgotten friend did all the tallcing. Dad hardly waited for an answer to his ques- tions, and all Johnson had to do was to nod his head up and down, gutlaw good and loud, and malce the old fraternity sign once in a while. Bob and Mr. Brown were already in the living room when Dad wallced in with Mr. Johnson. Bill Brown jumped up when he saw Dad and shouted a greeting. Dad practically llew to the ceiling with surprise. He quiclcly loolced at Bob. Bob loolced at the salesman. The salesman loolced at the door, even began wallcing toward it. Then Dad grabbed him by the coat-tail, yanlced him and Bill Brown into the dining room where they did some fraternity monlcey business. When we were all seated around the dining room table, Mr. Brown said to Dad, You lcnow. Sam, that boy is the spitting image of you. Yes, Bob agreed, Heverybody thinlcs that Dad loolcs lilce me. ' 'V-sra5,NR0oV ' As we think hack over our past tour years at Prospect Heights, can we select our most exciting day here? Was it the time we attended our first assemhly at Maxwell Annex, the time that Miss Ekholm proclaimed us the Class of June ASH? 01- was it one of the other red letter days ot X our varied careers? Today, with Class Day here, and with Commence- . ment coming soon, things keep jumping into our minds that we thought If had heen erased long ago. fx VV e remember the ever present Maxwell that played such an impor- R tant part in our growing up. We think of Miss Bentley and of all our - teachers, the hig events connected with them, and the little ones, like the MDORDON, first time microphones were installed in the auditorium. Vve all strained to notice the difference in the sound of a familiar voice, as the microphone stopped working, then went on again. Miss Vvitherhee continued to speak to us with no mechanical go-loetween, and her direct way of talking made us feel very close to her. As the term progressed, we discovered one another. Soon we went all out for the most vivid, wildest, gayest campaign posters for Connie Pafundi who decided to enter politics as our first term Vice-President. After a few weeks of General Science, we scorned plain water and drank H20 instead. We admired and envied Frances Di Gioia, winner of the Traver Award for Citizenship, a feat that inspired her to other honors in the G.O. Council. A group of us in Miss lVlcGinn's English class decided that we deserved more than a column in Scribe. We wanted all the ads taken out so that we could have the whole last page! We attained a stronger voice in school affairs, with Doris Bloom as President of the new Annex CLO., which she and Anita Brettschneider helped to form. Then came our concert assembly in which Dolores Belt, pianist and linguist, entertained us with her rendition of Grieg's Piano Concerto. We listened to Jo Nell Thomas's singing of popular tunes, and followed her when she joined Miss Martinys Glee Club. In due time we hade farewell to the friendly, draughty Maxwell with many a backward glance of affection for the pretzel man, appeaser of after-school appetites. We eagerly entered the dignified grey stone huilding that has been home to us ever since. We were new enough to he awed lay itashing senior huttons and marble staircases. We were still docile, meek, and right thinking. We went virtuously up the UP stair- cases and down the DOWN. I6 lt didn't talce us long to become oriented, and to seek for membership in clubs. We became nursery rhyme characters for a day and won the purple and gold Agatha bar. Lucy D'Agostino and Eleanor Allocca proved that one doesn,t need a pointed head to wear the Arista dunce cap. Those who were able to read shorthand notes baclc were awarded the light blue ribbon of Alpha. As we advanced in nerve, in age, and in wisdom, many of us devel- oped talents that we never lcnew we had. The aspiring writers congratu- lated Suzanne Miller, the first of us to get a poem into Cardinal. There was Rosalie Katz with her infectious giggle and her warm-hearted stories to help brighten the staff members when they were weary of reading manuscripts. Evelyn Kings stories and art worlc gave our magazine a truly professional touch. Eleanor Cohen and Julia Marenghi, two of our Cardinal artists, helped to give distinction to Cardinal. The guidance ol Mrs, Vvunnenberg, Miss lVlcEntee, Miss McKenna, and Mr. Nathanson. helped to lmit all the three staffs into one thriving organization. We were proud of Eleanor Castellano and Jean Haubold in the bright red ribbons ot the Usher Squad. While their ellliciency tool: care of the audience, Marilyn Von Freuden and the baclc stage club became the unseen performers at our plays and other activities. When we made the discovery that Agnes Comislcy was a whiz at boolclceeping, we drafted her to loolc after our accumulated CLO. fortune. We uncovered the mystery of Minerva at the fabulous fashion show, when Jeanette Burnett, Rita Ericlcson, Ann Villani, and Anita Palazzo, together with so many other C.D. students, won applause for their original creations. A proud day came when we read in the World Telegram that Devote Hanrahan had been chosen TEEN OF THE WEEK. It was at the same time that Eunice Lugo of story-telling fame decided to graduate in three and a half years and to join our class. With our Senior term came many honors, along with shiny buttons and senior thrills. Little Connie Chunga climbed to head Big Sister. a smiling little Big Sister, who was still ready to run her feet olf for anyone at any time. At the Prom we loolced at the mature young ladies and tried to recognize in them the bobby soxers of yesterday. It has been a wonderful four years, every hour ol it. and we shall go from Prospect Heights a little wiser, and a good deal better prepared to talce our places in the world than we were when we entered it. Our IT gratitude and appreciation go to Mr. Hoiotber tor ttie long tlours imc tias spent working for and wittl us. We stiaii rememtmer Miss Greene for iier devotion to us, Miss Kysor tor inner endless Concern for our happiness, safety and comfort. I have heen to Madame La :-.- g .-.-.. f Q 0 W CLASS PROPHECY : : w W Haseehit. But the thing that thrilled me .i,, 5 I most was the time my uncle from Scachatori, Pa., sent me a crystal hall for a hirthday present. l set the heautilul, smolcey-glass glohe on my dresser, pulled down the shades, and loolced into the glass of the future. From its depths l saw absolutely nothing except my own reflection. Then l remembered, I had forgotten to aslc the crystal hall what I wanted to see. What did I want to see? Then I knew. fd prove to my dishelieving friends that there was a way to prophesy the future. l'd tell them where they,d he ten years from now. Oh, magic crystal of the future, tell me where my friends will he ten years from now,H I chanted. Almost immediately the crystal changed into a cardinal-and-white churning mass. Then slowly it settled down. and in one corner of the glass, l was ahle to malce out the figure of a hlonde girl. She was seated at a deslc, talcing notes from a tall, distin- guished woman. A sign on the door read Do not disturh. This is the private ollice of the President of the United Statesf' Maureen Hole had heen promoted againl Then. to my amazement, I recognized the dis- tinguished young woman who was dictating as Susan McCormick, the girl who sat next to me in my English class. HVVait,u I screamed, as the picture faded slowly away and murlcy undertones of purples and hlues rose to the surface. But time was passing, and my crystal hall would wait for no one. Out ol the mist popped a small artistic hand holding a long golden ruling pen and triangle. Then slowly a head and loody appeared. Here was Elaine Weinstein, famous as a pioneer in modern typography. As the inventor of the original square-oval letter, she had achieved lame. A pencil hrolce through the mist, and I heard a voice yell. Mama, l'm 21 hungry. l shoolc my crystal to see what could have happened, and then looked to see Ellen Gerstein rubbing her head and waving her fist at me. Here was the oddest office I had ever seen. A crib stood in the corner, and the room was littered with children's toys. Ellen was proving that even the editor of Vogue could successfully mix marriage and a career. Miss Cipola is here now, and she is ready to be photographed with the Hope diamond, a messenger girl said. Rosalie Cipola of rosebud lips and swan-neclc fame, breezed in like a feather, wearing a long, black Florence Solomon Original. It was a blaclc sill: that could be stretched from an afternoon dress into an evening gown by a slight tug at the hem. Once again a violent eruption shoolc the crystal. Uver and over the magic vapors churned, until they gradually calmed themselves into the form of a laboratory. This was the famous Ger-Shore-Korf Laboratory in Texas City. pronounced lilce a sneeze, this team had proved that aslonganamis could cure anything, from hams to people. It had changed the human life span to 190 years. It was made up of three solutions: a cold cream invented by Claire Shore, a Latin herb discovered by Barbara Ger. and Lila Korf's new mathematical symbol which, dividing the two, produced the magic cream. To think that ten years before this we had all been guinea pigs for these experiments! Not even waiting for the scene to change, Florence Kolasinslci came dashing in and breathlessly excused herself, but Rogers 5' Hammerstein were rehearsing a new show, and she hated to keep the cast waiting. As she spolce, a curtain ot mist fell over her. ln her place stood Fay Katz. As editor of the Textile Vvorlcers Daily she had astounded the industry with her revolutionary black-on-black design. She both wrote and illus- trated personalized blouses. She was playing the part of celebrity now, as Marsha Syndell interviewed her for her syndicated column, ulVlarsha,s Many Moods. mls it true,H the columnist asked, Hthat you went to school with Zelda Herman before she went to Hollywood? A roar sounded forth from the crystal, and a blaclc Hash ot lightning shook it to its base. Rose Marie Stenza was fighting again in Congress. As Senator from New Yorlc State, she had baclced Felicia Phetlens ap- pointment as Secretary of the Treasury. Now she stood on the Hoor of Congress and yelled, UAS Senator from New York State, I say, if Annie Ferindiano is not elected Miss America, America will be turning reac- tionaryl turning reactionaryl turning reactionaryln The words were repeated over and over, fading slowly away. My crystal ball was weary. Never again could it match the bright lights of 1958 that it had just foretold. 22 G. O.
