As I looked more closely af fhe Spirif, I saw a kind face, an encouraging smile, a friendly exfended hand. Suddenly reassured, I followed if wifh curiosify and obedience. We journeyed fogefher down a brillianfly lighfed sfreef where we saw fhrongs of people milling in and ouf of an amusemenf cenfer. My escorf poinfed fo fhe largesf fheafre. l caughf my breafh as I saw fhe brighf marquee sparkling on and off wifh fhe name of Roslyn Safier. Inside, fhe audience shoufed for fhe aufhor of THE MURDERERS, fhe drama fhaf had iusf been enacfed. Charloffe Rubensfein sfepped ouf on fhe sfage fo fake a bow. Her play had been a success, for during Miss Safier's performance, fhe bruneffe in fhe sixfh row had furned grey, and fhe hair of fhe bald genfleman in fhe balcony sfood on end. We moved on again. The sound of a magnificenf song filled my ears, and l knew fhaf we were af fhe Mefropolifan Opera House where a new blonde prima donna, Joan Mandel, was playing opposife her Romeo, Laurifz Melchior. Ballerinas arabesqued gracefully across fhe sfage. The lead was danced by Phyllis French, sfar of fhe Ballef Charloffe de Russe, nofed for her ferpsichorean feaf of kicking bofh feef info fhe air af once. I was so absorbed fhaf my friendly ghosf had fo nudge me and poinf fo his 2I iewel movemenf Bulova which indicafed fhe fime fo be four A. M. On fhe nexf block a group of chic women peered info a window. Following fheir lead, I looked foo, and saw fwo very arfy looking arfisfs, Connie Marchal and Carole Paley who were puffing fhe lasf fouches on a window display. Inside, a famous designer, Beafrice Sfeger, worked in her imposing salon, while admiring eyes wafched her drape a small square of precious maferial on her beaufiful seven fool' model, Helen Gomez. Moving on, we passed a secfion of fhe cify where fhe arfisfs gafhered. There was a fine modern building buf my leader, fhe genfle ghosf, poinfed a persisfenf finger upward, far upward. We paid no affenfion fo fhe luxurious room of which we had passing glimpses, buf made righf for fhe affic. There was fhe owner of fhe fine home, fhe famous arfisf and philosopher who felf fhaf she musf simulafe poverfy and live in an affic fo do her besf work.
