13 VARSITY BASEBALL Ending the IQSO baseball season as state runners-up the Proctor Phantoms finished with a lO-IO record. Beating Poultney. Ludlow. and B.EA. in the play-otfs. the Phantoms didn't fare as well against Oxbow's Bob Vallianl in the finals. Although Mike Fiske pitched a fine game for Proctor. the teams usually strong offense couldnit operate against Valliant's tough pitching. Biarne Skietne spoiied Oxbow's hopes for a no-hitter when he laid down a perfect hunt in the seventh inning. Despite their ten losses the Phantoms. coached by Wade Mit- chell who was assisted by Lee Orvis. - -d-----,--w:.-Id-II- L... t .pJI J; P'aved huStliHB Games throughout Kneeling. J. Morgan. B. Skieme. . . . and so it goes ..;-..-.--. ! CROSS COUNTRY This year marks the second consecutive seascm for the cross- country team coached by Roy Pilcher. The boy's team included Jon Baker. Jeff Cook, Peter Jalberl. Kevm Jones. and Kevin Wheeler. The girrs team had only three membersv Andrea Jones. lynn Pilcher. and Marie Smith. As this was not enough for a team. the girls competed individually. The season started with an MVI. pre-season meet at Mill River and concluded with the stale finals in Montpelier in November. Everyone competed well against more exper- ienced teams. One Phanlorn runner. Jon Baker. was elected to the MVL All-Star team. The Proctorian apologizes to the cross-country team for not including any pictures of them. Our excuse? None were taken! 27

SOFTBALL The girls' varsity softball team impmved last year's record impres- sively by ending the season with a 4-D regular season and a 5-l3 overall record. Their five wins consisted of defeating Poultney and MSJ twice apiece and also overtaking Whit- comb High in the Group II division quarter finals. Having been selected to par- ticipate in the Division II playoffs. they easily won that quarter-final match. This qualifying victory sent them to Bethel to compete against Rochester for the semi-final win. They were defeated. however. in a tight battle by a score of I3-9. In her first year of softball coaching lynn Johnson has worked extremely hard with her girls and has dame an exceptioual iob improv- ing skills and introducing new ones. 'e .IC-JT: Front row. 5.
