The staff raised enough money to extend the book eight pages without even rais- ing the price! The staff has put a lot of time into making this the best yearbook ever. SUTHERLAND The Sutherland placed first in the Columbia Scho- lastic Press Association for a school our size despite financial difficulty. WiLh Kim Valloch as our new editor. The band was better than ever, and besides giving superb perform- ances at the Christmas and Spring concerts and Awards Night it also traveled to the All-State parade in Burlington, the Loyalty Day parade in Rutland. and the Mem- orial Day parade in Proctor. Band members attended the Regional Festival at Mill River and the Solo Ensemble Festival. All the band members eagerly look for- ward to the summer town band. WINTER CARNIVAL The 1976 Winter Carnival was a. big success. thanks to the participation of the students at Proctor High. The seni iors won the carnival trophy for the third year in a row, but this year really had tough competition from the sopho- more class which lost 10 the seniors by one-half point. Congratulations any- way. seniors: you did a great job! The week's festivities ended with Lhe only formal ball of the year. These students pulled a wooden cannon from Stoweil Chevrolet in Rulland to the McKinley Ave. fire staiion in Rutland Town. The 1975 soccer team had a record of 12 wins. 0 defeats. and 4 Lies. Coach Orvis attributed Lhe fine season to excellent spirit and team play. He felt it was one of the most rewarding years for the players and the coaches since the team was not expected to accomplish so much. The team is loosing several seniors but has a fine nucleus of underclassmen returning. Coach Orvis and the team are looking forward 10 another exciting soccer season next year. I a l 'n Below. R 1. They were league champs with a record of 11 wins - no losses - 1 tie. A strong defense. accurate passes. and good Liming were the. keys that helped them put together 7 shut-outs during the season. BO YSt VA RSITY BA SKETBA LL Under rookie coach Wade Mitchell the phantoms had a very successful and exciting season as they won the M division of the Marble Valley League and advanced to the class M state finals. Opening the season with 12 straight wins the Phantoms eventually ended up with a 19-5 record as they were upset by West Rutland in the finals 44-39. In winning the MVL the Phantoms knocked off Class I champs Burt and Burton 68-59 and extentled the school's winning streak to 41 straight unbeaten games before bowing to Fair Haven. Kneeling. Coach Dorr. GIRLS, VA RSITY BA SKETBA LL The 1975-76 girls varsity basketball team had another great year. They played 14 CVGAL games and ended with a 12-2 record. They reached the toumeys and beat Concord 59-48. In the quarterfinals the girls lost a hard game to Whitcomb 42-36. Ludlow held a Christmas tournament. but the Phantomeues could not pull in a vic- tory. High scorers included Dianne Degnen with 219 points. Pam Shostak with 191. and Andy Larson with 181. Judy Frazier collected a total of 201 rebounds and Ann Zani 148. Sopho- more Deb Provencher was a big help when relief was needed. with no returning starters. the 1976-77 Phanto- mettes should have a very interesting year! 21 22 VARSITY CHEERLEA D- ERS The past year was a. most exciting one for the cheerleaders. We had two great squads of hard working athletes. They spent many hours devel- oping new cheers and pep rally ideas. Their poster contest was very successful and the results graced our gym through- out the season. Nevertheless. the girls were the epitome of good sportsmanship under some very trying situmions. They attended a cheerleading clinic at M51 and placed second against other Rutland County schools. BA SEBA LL The Proctor Phantoms won their third straight M.V.L. title and third straight Class M State Championship this year. boasting a 15-2 record over- all. The Phantoms beat West Rutland tn the state. finals 3-0 and tied with Otter Valley for the M.V.L. champi- onship with a 10-1 record.Coach Mitchell did a fine job again this year. upping the Phantoms' record to 42-4 for the past 3 years. Along the way Proctor beat Class 1.. power Brattleboro and Class I state champs Otter Valley. proving that the Phantoms are as good as any team in the state. and that they are still number 1 23 TEAM PHOTO: Front. The girls were seeded second and moved directly into the quarter finals where they won over Twinfield 15-3. This was the first time a Proctor girls' team had made it into the semi- finals. a proud moment for ever- yone. They lost in the semi- finals to Wilmington 9-3. F. weidman. leand I'V' Tourney' The Miem Of 11115 team will be looked for in future years. 27 28 JUNIOR HIGH BOYS, BA SKETBA LL The 1975-76 junior high basket- ball team. coached by Mike Corey, sported an 8-6 record. The squad consisted of 20 eager players. most of whom saw action in well over half the games. The high point of the season came when they dropped a 43-40 decision to West Rutland in an aetion-packed final in the jr. high tournament. Many of the boys will be moving to the jr. varsity next year: however. there will be a strong contingent remaining behind from the 7th grade to insure great thin- in 1976-77. JUNIOR HIGH GIRLSh BASKETBALL The junior high girls' basketball team entered its second season with a team of 6 players: C. Burgess. Co-capts. N. Izzo and E. Socinski. S. Lester. S. Loso, and V. Tanner. They played a lO-game schedule with a final standing of 2-8, which does not accurately reflect the tre- mendous progress. effort. and enthusiasm evident in all the play- ers. JV CHEERLEA DING The JV cheerleading squad did a great job supporting the JV boys. They worked hard with the varsity cheerleading Squad in planning the pep rallies and poster contest. Unfortunately. the Ivts lost a mem- ber due to an injury, but the enthu- siasm was as strong as ever. The sopho- more-junior dance was a huge success. The juniors came in last in the candy sale but had a bottle drive and raised $65. They placed third in the Winter Carnival. 41 SOPHOMORES 12 As usual the enthusias- tic sophomores had a good year. In the Winter Carnival events they placed second. losing to the seniors by a half point. With a first place win in the candy sale, a very successful turkey raffle, and a carwash. the sophomores are now $120 richer than last year.
