651 the basketball season ln the walie of a great football Season our basketball team came through with a good measure of the success that seemed to favor all of Principia's sports activities through the past year. Qur conference was the strongest it has been for a number of years, yet we made a tine showing for a really outstanding season. From a wealth of Freshman material and a few letter-men Coach Berninger built up a squad that played smart, fast basketball throughout, winning eleven out of seventeen starts. At the end of the regular playing season, in which we won nine out of fourteen games, we entered the conference tournament. After losing a hard-fought first round game to Hannibal by a score of 56 to 51, the team continued through the consolation series and defeated Iefferson City. Vtle went into the tinal round and became consolation champions by defeating Central Vtlesleyan -10 to 50. Two members of the team were given honorable mention on the All-Conference Team. The season's records show that our team outscored its opponents -199 to -150 points. Offen- sively we made good on 162 out of 711 shots at the basket for a scoring percentage of 250, Xve derived lots of enjoyment out of all the home games, but certainly the most thrilling was that Flat River game. lfyou recall, it was a close contest all the way through, each team holding the lead at various stages and consistently playing Hne ball. Vtle were one point behind, the ball was in the air, and the gun went off. Nlaybe you remember holding your breath until the ball snapped through the hoop and gave us a 28 to 27 victory! Brewer, XV. .Xlexandelx on the gridiron The first team in the history ofthe Principia to achieve a perfect season. Undefeated, un- tied, and not scored upon. Conference champions. Those statements are engraved on a silver plaque that hangs in our athletic trophy case, and they graphically record the unusual success which our College football team enjoyed last season. ln making this fine record, the team, ably coached hy Mr. Clark and his assistants, scored 9-l points in playing their regular schedule of five games. At the end ofthe season we played a post-season game with Shurtleff College which was of special significance in that it marked our first venture into four-year-college competition. It proved to he one of the lnest games of the year, and our squad displayed a fine brand of ball in earning a 12-12 tie with a team that was heavier and more experienced. At the close of the conference season four of our players were awarded places on the All-Conference first team, four others on the second team, and one received honorable mention. But we must not forget the B team, which, as a reserve squad, is quite essential to the success of the regulars It also performed well in winning all of its four games fought on the lower campus. YVe can he mighty proud ot' our success in football this year and quite optimistic as to our fortunes next season. Conference Games ..A..
