WURKER DISSATISFACTIUN IN THE '70's HAROLD IKNEHEPPARD NEAL 0. HERRICK Foreword by .Haney Swadas DEHUMANIZATION -- the taking away of your sense of creativity, your feeling of responsibility for your work, and the feeling that your work is important. Dehumanization on the job is a topic which effects every- one. lt's not something which will become relevant in two, three, or four years. lt's relevant right now because all of us have a job and we have to be sure that we are fulfilled, challenged, and satisfied by what we are doing. Some people thought that we were only talking about the blue-collar assembly line worker. That kind of tunnel vi- sion seriously hindered what they could get out of the con- ference. The values we were talking about apply to all jobs, but people need to relate them to their own experi- ence. Students often fail to realize how dehumanized they can become by methodically attending classes, writing pa- pers and taking exams, without expressing creativity and originality. Each person will seek in his vocational life to make the kind of adjustment which at the time seems best to satisfy the needs and motivations of his own human nature. . . There is often no sharp break between the job activity and the rest of a person's life. --John Dewey 50 such things as your sense of self- respect,

X. 'Au Without doubt the best part of the program was the timing. Before we left I didn't know very much about the energy crisis, but while we were there it exploded into a national issue. As a result of working with this issue I've learned so many ways that we can conserve en- ergy. But more than that I learned how a corner of Washington works and I gained a sense of my own ability to get things done. The bureaucracy and red tape was just amazing. ,Zara .QQ ww It took my agency six weeks to blend us into their organization. This really made me reevaluate whether I wanted to get involved in politics or not. I really loved being in the academic world as well as the real world. There were a lot of prob- lems with the program, but I feel as though I re- ally learned from it. I do wish we had had more orientation before we went. Most likely we would have gotten more out of the experience, because I spent an awful lot of time trying to figure out what they were talking about. I really wish people on campus would use us more as resource people. Ev- eryone asks whether or not we had a good time. But few people want to know what we learned. Right now a lot of us know ways that this campus can really conserve energy. We'd love to start applying what we learned. I -gq.,,1,,5--' Q ' ' ' 'WT' ZH
