I think it's ridiculous for a college to state that it is a liberal arts school without requiring some type of study program abroad. Americans need to have their viewpoints stretched, altered, challenged by interna- tional cultures. There's an awful lot to be said for cultural submission. You see your country, your col- lege, your family, through a totally different lense. This prompts an awful lot of good questioning. During the trip my concept of myself changed tre- mendously. I became a more serious student, really interested for the first time in my own education. But at the same time l was enjoying learning about people in general much more than I ever had. When you're abroad l think 952, of what you learn is about people and how you relate to them and their ideas about life, education, government, and religion. 17
