A knowledge of a physical science such as CHEMIS- TRY is fundamental for anyone living in the increasing- ly technological society of today. Chemical phenomena are relative to art, food processing, environmental studies, industry, and agriculture. Vital applications of chemistry are being made in archeology, thermo- dynamics, geology, and molecular cytology, as well. . The study of MUSIC gives the student the discipline of recognizing many qual- ities in operation through the expression of sound-- qualities such as balance, variety, unity, intensity, accuracy, beauty, har- mony, and color. -- yy up Ethelyn M. A COMPUTER is a very useful machine which anyone can operate. Ninety per- cent of the population is ignorant of computers, yet, computers regulate our lives. If Prin's IBM 1130 broke down--students with jobs would not be paid, the register would be unable to issue grade reports, the library would have a huge tangle in its records, and departments such as chemistry, physics, geology, and sociology would lose an invaluable teaching and research aid. The aim of the FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPART- MENT is to provide the student with the oppor- ttmity of acquiring an intelligent appreciation and understanding of foreign peoples through the medium of their languages--to enable him to be- come better acquainted with their social, cul- tural, historical, and literary backgrounds.

Freshman Project! The freshmen I had worked with before the Fresh- man Project as Well as most other students were poorly prepared for college. They were not taking advantage of what was here. We thought better pre- paration in the freshman year might help solve the problem. As it stands right now, the Project is not the an- swerg it was not meant to be. The Project is only secondarily meant to have an impact on the students in it. The major reason for having it is to learn about freshmen, what their needs are and how to meet them. I have been so close to the Project, so involved in it each quarter, that it is hard for me to sit back and say what We have learned. I think the freshman year has to include a transition between spoon-fed educa- tion--the kind you get in high school and television-- and independent education--the kind they are suppos- ed to be doing in college. --David Nartonis 311 'p7 5,.
