JULIAN BOND -J . 2? I ! ' f l ' 5 W i EQ Q3 ,ll It is almost as though we were climbing a molasses mountain dressed in Snowshoes, while the rest of the country rides a rather leisurely skylift to the top. lf the election on the 2nd of November illu- minated any kind of political movement at all, it was the movement of the comfortable, the callous, and the smug closing their ranks, and closing their hearts, against the claims and calls to conscience put forward by the forgotten and unrepresented elements in American society. Today a new crop of national political lead- ers has begun the job the White South once thought was their's alone, deciding on the proper political, educational, and economic position of the nation's non-white people. This new group of leaders marches backward like an off-key Salvation Army Band. Richard Nixon will be president for four more years. I want him to like me. For ex- ample, I'm learning how to tap dance. A great deal of fashionably long hair seems to be the current camouflage for red necks. I know for a fact that you are the brightest, most intelligent, best educated, most moral, well read, decent-minded, open-hearted, warm-blooded, quick-thinking group of young people to come down the pike since last year. 1 ,fn vi? Celebrations 'Behind Celebrations, which is an essay in group thea- ter, is a theme of love and brotherhood. It states that if we think and work together we can make progress in our association with each other. In the beginning Celebrations gives the audience a near euphoric feeling of, 'Oh this is lovely. This is what it is like to be with other people when you're not hung up with all the things that separate people. This is people communicating lovingly, without exploiting each other. ' Then in performance the audience sees the problem, tensions, hang ups, difficulties, and dissensions. Yet the chorus claims that all men are brothers, and the audience has experienced a hint of what life can be like. I didn't want to make my audience uncomfortable al- though I did want them to comfront attitudes within themselves, and I did want them to come to new conclu- sions about life. Beneath the differences of opinion between group mem- bers was a desire to produce something of use to other people, something to help them. A Very genuine affec- tion grew amongst us. We didn't develop as an exclusive group, but as a group that is gentle and has a genuine desire to share what it has experienced. I'd like to see this kind of production done more frequently. 129 Donald Mainwaring
