126 Social Workers Speak Out I always knew that people responded to love, but I had never seen it so clearly as when I started doing social work. At first I thought I would be teaching, but the real need was for these children to have some- one to talk to, a friend. It really took us a long time to learn to trust each other, but it was worth waiting for. Personally, I needed to learn to be patient and let someone grow at their own pace, not mine. Social work gives us a chance to stop talking about helping people and the great rewards that will come from it, and start doing it. Frankly I saw few results from my work, but I knew that I had helped. T oo often we expect the child to change over- night, to become just like us. I used to think that everyone that cared about people could be a social worker. That's not true. I'm glad that I had the experience, but I learned that this type of work just isn't for me. I'm so glad I learned before I graduated as a sociology major. Social work forces a Prin person to con- front the community at its own terms, on its ground. I think this is tremendously important because it teaches you humility and makes you listen to what's being said beneath the surface.

JULIAN BOND -J . 2? I ! ' f l ' 5 W i EQ Q3 ,ll It is almost as though we were climbing a molasses mountain dressed in Snowshoes, while the rest of the country rides a rather leisurely skylift to the top. lf the election on the 2nd of November illu- minated any kind of political movement at all, it was the movement of the comfortable, the callous, and the smug closing their ranks, and closing their hearts, against the claims and calls to conscience put forward by the forgotten and unrepresented elements in American society. Today a new crop of national political lead- ers has begun the job the White South once thought was their's alone, deciding on the proper political, educational, and economic position of the nation's non-white people. This new group of leaders marches backward like an off-key Salvation Army Band. Richard Nixon will be president for four more years. I want him to like me. For ex- ample, I'm learning how to tap dance. A great deal of fashionably long hair seems to be the current camouflage for red necks. I know for a fact that you are the brightest, most intelligent, best educated, most moral, well read, decent-minded, open-hearted, warm-blooded, quick-thinking group of young people to come down the pike since last year. 1 ,fn vi?
