The International Fair Adds Flavor Zur 1 i wmv du f n ,ww V1 gif Most of the international students who first came to Princi- pia experience a Variety of cultural shocks. We felt the need to form a group to share ideas and activities. During the Weekly meetings the International Fair was conceived. 126 Social Workers Speak Out I always knew that people responded to love, but I had never seen it so clearly as when I started doing social work. At first I thought I would be teaching, but the real need was for these children to have some- one to talk to, a friend. It really took us a long time to learn to trust each other, but it was worth waiting for. Personally, I needed to learn to be patient and let someone grow at their own pace, not mine. Social work gives us a chance to stop talking about helping people and the great rewards that will come from it, and start doing it. Frankly I saw few results from my work, but I knew that I had helped. T oo often we expect the child to change over- night, to become just like us. I used to think that everyone that cared about people could be a social worker. That's not true. I'm glad that I had the experience, but I learned that this type of work just isn't for me. I'm so glad I learned before I graduated as a sociology major. Social work forces a Prin person to con- front the community at its own terms, on its ground. I think this is tremendously important because it teaches you humility and makes you listen to what's being said beneath the surface.
