The Student Senate Strives Student government really doesn't exist at Principia. Governing power isn't ours to have since Principia is a private institution a.nd the students here are under contract agreement. Student Senate is an organizer not a governor. Our strength, our power, our value lies in what we can contribute as working members of this community. We have the power to funnel valuable student input into nearly every aspect of Prin- cipia's operation. The Senate should be a coordinating body which opens channels, achieves changes, and increases understanding on the campus. UnfortLmately the influences of the Senate on the students is highly questionable. We have no means of finding out what stu- dents are thinking except through the house presidents. I don't think the house presidents reach everyone on campus but right now the house is the basic unit on campus. Every student is a member of a house. We're still going through the eternal hassle as to who should be on the Student Senate -- house presidents or other members of the student body. Personally I've gained so much insight from being on the Senate, but I do see a great gap between where we are and where we could be. Some Senate members have a really clear understanding of the purpose of Senate but most don't. Some are still just attending the meetings without comprehending what's going on. We've got an awful lot of growing to do, but I think we're beginning to move. IIO to Open Channels

The value of Men's Organization is that it provides for collective action within the Quad. Guys with the responsibilities of a house president need to share their ideas, their problems, their solutions. As a board We've been determining what the needs of the community are. In our discussion of problems we realized there were two types--the behavioral and the attitudinal. The behavioral is obviously the infringe- ments o school policies such as drinking, drugs, etc. Too often the attitudinal problems are just pas- sed over. These include such things as inconsidera- tion in the dorm. I think we're far from where we want to be as a Quad, but that's normal. You never get as far as you Want to, and if you do you'd better reexamine your goals. We've got pretty far to go as a campus, but We always Will. 112
