TRACK This year's team was one of the smallest in the school's history. This was due to: Q11 a lack of any committment by past lettermen who didn't comeout or dropped off after doing so, f2l a lack of any committment by athletes with past track experience who didn't come out or dropped off after doing so. The resulting lack of depth, inexperience in some events, and an inconsistent com- mittment by everyone who did participate, were the main factors relating to the lopsided defeats in dual and triangular meet competition . Varsity track is and can be a worthwhile activity for those willing to commit themselves to the hard work which is, and must be, a part of the fun of track. High points of the season were the teams' 4th place finishes in the NAIA District 20 Meet and the Washington University- Principia College Invitational, the elect- ion of freshman jamie Fleming as team captain, and a new school record in the discus by freshman Dave Daniels. All along the way I saw girls break through barriers and start playing really good tennis. I can go down through all the players and see times where they really came through and lived up to their potential. In fact the only problem the A team had to overcome was to get sobered up in time for the matches --they were always laughing and having a good time together. There was such a nice rapport be- tween the girls, and they always had a good, solid attitude. BECKY SANKNER 99 BASEBALL The 1973 Principia baseball sea- son was unusual, to say the least. The team had high hopes of a good season, but the weather and their opponents dampened the year. lt looked for a while like they would never get a game in, and when the skies finally cleared the team showed the effects of the lack of practice. After the first two games, though, the team settled down and won five out of six. They really played well in this stretch, scoring an average of ten runs a game. The pitching was fairly good, also, and the defense made some fine plays. This was the season. No one can explain the second half. The team lost 9 out of 10 including their last 7 straight. The team didn't play that badly but did not play well enough to win. The final record was 6 and 12. The toughest losses came in a double-header at Westminster 2-1 and 1-O. Although the season did not turn out as well as expected there were a few bright spots and everyone is looking forward to next year. TOM CARROLL
