A N ' u BASKETBALL The 1972-1973 season was primarily a disappointing one because we didn't consistently play at the level of which we were capable. Although at times we demonstrated our capability to be an excellent team, our inconsistency in maintaining this high level is reflected in our 9-13 record. With everyone back from this year's team the challenge of the 1973-1974 team will be to defeat the problems of incon- sistency in play, and in playing as a team instead of as individuals. High points of the season were our upset of Wright State University in the first round of the Rose-Hulman Tournament and the progress and play of the junior Varsity. LARRY COMBS DARYL LEONARD For the first time in the history of the school the Howard Mitchell Athlete of the Year Award was gi- ven to a woman, Daryl Leonard. This annual award is given to the senior athlete who maintains a satisfactory scholastic record and who has made a significant and worthwhile contribution to The Principia's intercollegiate athletics. This year Daryl made it to the Nationals in field hockey and the state tournament in basketball. Former WRA president, Daryl is considered by her coaches to be at 1 The hardest working athlete they've ever known. 1... .yypa-ll ' GOLF Although hampered by rain and high water, the Principia golf team completed the season compiling a 7-5 record. The team got off to an encouraging start at the Univ. of Miami Invitational Golf Tournament during Spring break. After the first round of play on the Biltmore Country Club, the golfers were 11th in a field of 50 teams. Back at school the campaign was a story of success mixed with failure. After two losses the team recovered with five victories and a seventh place finish in the NAIA District Meet. JIM LINDEMAN 97

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL For the first time the basketball team made it to the state tourna- ment where they were popular as a team. We were one of the top two teams in Illinois. The only thing that could have been better was the individual support within the team. There was a need I to support each other more. JUDY MILLER SWIMMING College age swimmers can really be challenged by the claims of physical peaking and mental exhaustion after already long careers in competition, and many wrestle with the temptation to hang it all up. This year we faced this challenge in several ways. We had to deal with the losses to the team of talented men who decided they no longer want- ed to work- out. We asked ourselves if we had in fact exhausted ourselves mental- ly and strove to explore new relationships between our- 1 selves as athletes and our understanding of Christian Science. We had to find ways within ourselves to swim faster, because the coach knew no se- crets of technique or shortcuts to success. Fi- nally we looked for new ways to make the same old thing fun. The result of the season was the growth of pride and unity that results from hard work and love applied towards reasonably clearcut objectives. Consistent lowering of times through the season by the great majority of team members culmina- ting in 3rd place out of twelve schools at the NAIA District 20 Meet and lst place at the Washington University Invitational. New school records were created by distance swimmers Pete Clifford and Ed Hammersla and by our diver Ross Biclmese. Keith Duesenberg lost the 50 freestyle in dual meet competition only once. jim Kendrick and Gary Hauk consis- tently contributed large portions of the teams total points, with jim peaking exceptionally well in the two championship meets. This was a special group of freshmen and sopho mores who I think would agree with me that it was worth the time and pain and who would do it again Cthough perhaps NOT to the tune of Rocky Mountain Helloj. WOMEN'S SOFTBALL Considering the skill with which We started every- one has gained an awful lot. As a team they really pulled everything together. The most exciting part of our season was when We played the extra inning victory over john Logan. This was interesting because the team had become very discouraged and depressed in the middle of the game, but after a talk about it they changed their attitude and came from 3 runs behind to win. JUDY MILLER Af 4 w. Q TENNIS The 1973 Varsity Tennis Team has very likely been the strongest tennis team Principia has ever had. And yet I'd only rate our season as fairly good I say this because of the great potential that's there and Wasn't reached this year. The guys on the team are not satis- fied With this year's season, and they have expressed a desire for a more professional approach to varsity tennis. Next year can't help but benefit from such an attitude. DON STECKLER 98
