POLICY OE Tl-IE lvlEN'S ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT Men's aThleTics aT The Principia have been marked during The pasT several years by sTeady growTh in The number oT boys who have been able To Take parT in compeTiTive sporTs. This has been made possible in The college Through The organizing oT boTh varsiTy and inTramural Teams, and in The Upper School by The A. B. C. sysTem, inTroduced aT The Principia several years ago by Mr. Lee McCanclless, DirecTor OT lvlen's AThleTics. The A. B. C. sysTem Drovides Tor The division oT all boys in The Upper School inTo A, B, and C groups acco rding To a schedule oT exponenTs based on age, weighT, heighT, and scholasTic class. Each group has iTs own Teams in TooTball and baskeTbaII, which play wiTh Teams in The corresponding division Trom oTher schools in The A. B. C. League, composed oT John Burroughs, ST. Louis CounTry Day School, WesTern MiliTary Academy, and The Principia. Under This A. B. C. sysTem noT only do more boys parTici- paTe acTively in aThleTics, buT They compeTe againsT boys com- parable wiTh Themselves in size and skill. AT The end oT The year a cup is awarded To The school whose Teams have won The greaTesT aggregaTe number oT conTesTs in all league sporTs. The College Teams belong To The Missouri Junior College ConTerence, which provides regular aThleTic relaTionships wiTh Junior College Teams ThroughouT The sTaTe. An inTeresTing schedule wiTh keen compeTiTion is Thus mainTained. ln boTh The College and Upper School, Toofball, loaskeTball, swimming and Track are oTTered as major sporTs. Tennis, inTramural box- ing, and Upper School soccer are minor awardiacTiviTies. For college men noT desiring varsiTy compeTiTion, There are various inTramural acTiviTies which have proved To be oT keen inTeresT To Those parTicipaTing. This year volleyball Teams were organ- ized in The Tall. During The winTer an inTramural baskeTball league had a hoTly conTesTed series oT games, while in The spring, classes in iunior and senior liTe saving insTrucTion were held. Under This plan pracTically all college men were able To Take parT in some sorT oT compeTiTive physical Training.
