J J 1 S 4 COACHE Mr. Dale Englehorn, as coach of Princeville High School, and Mr. James Mursener, as assistant coach, have worked very hard to produce successful athletic teams. They should be com- mended for their fine work and tireless effort. Mr. Dale Engelhorn, Coachg Mr. James Mursener, Assistant Coach The managers are a very essential part of the team and are greatly appreciated by the members of the squads. They have been very efficient in caring for all the athletic equipment and helping the coaches. They have done a great deal to help make a successful season. Bill Moody, Don Pullen, Norman Wielanol, Joe Blank. Page fortyrfour F V l I v-.. FOOTBALL With several returning lettermen, our coaches built a very strong football team. Having lost the opening game to Toulon, Princeville fought determinedly against a strong Galva team to start a winning streak. With the spirit engrossed in them by the coaches they went roaring on down to Chilli and Bradford. Then due to iniury to a key backtield man, the morale of the team was lessened and they took a drumming from Wyoming to the tune of 7 to 6. After this the team went on to defeat Wetherstield, only to go down the next game to powerful Walnut. The season was finished up with a heartbreaking loss to Dunlap by l point. The Junior Varsity coached by James Mursener got oFf to a fair start although they had a few inexperienced players. They fought to a tie with Roosevelt. They then won three games in succession from Galva, Chilli, and Wethersfield. The next game was with Chilli, due to fumbles and trouble in the line, Chilli was able to over power us and take the game 6 to O. They came surging back to defeat a determined Canton team by a terrific score of 20 to O. The season was finished by winning from Bradford T9 to T3. With this kind of play Princeville should have strong teams in the future. Along with the letter- men, several Juniors and Sophomores made up the squad. In the early games they had trouble, but after the Galva Tournament they seemed to find themselves and everyone started to work as they should. The squad ran into some tough breaks with Walnut and Galva and lost the Blackhawk League leadership, but placed second in the Kickapoo League. For the first time in the history of the school the Princes played in the finals of the Galesburg Regional Tournament and lost by a margin of only three points. At least four Juniors from this year's squad, together with several good Sopho- more and Freshmen players, will be returning to make up the Varsity for the year of T949-1950. These boys have been getting experience playing varsity ball and have shown that they can have a successful season for Princeville High School next year. Mr, Dale Engelhorn, Coach. First Row: Bill Moody, Bob Perdelwitz, Elwood Peterson, Bob Robinson, Alfred Streitmatter. Second Row: Francis Owens, Duane Elsasser, Don Dell, Bob Slane, Moe Schafer, Fred Lindquist. Page forty eight JUNIOR VAR ITY BA KETB ll The J. V.'s record was not nearly as impressive as the Varsity's record, but they left little doubt that Princeville teams in future years will uphold the fine record of the local school. ln early season games the Junior Varsity was composed chiefly of members of the Freshman and Sophomore Classes. Later in the season, however, several Varsity reserves of the Junior Class were added to the roster and played a good share of the time. lt was felt by the coaches that some boys who were seeing little actual game service needed the practical experience for the coming year. The primary purpose of J. V. basketball is to build for the future. With that thought in mind, a large group was used in most games, thereby giving many candidates a first taste of high school basketball and invaluable experience to aid them in time to come. lt is the fond hope of the coaches, faculty, and fans that playing experience on the Junior Varsity in 1948-1949 will bring forth the best Princeville team in history a few years hence. The extent of our fortunes would depend on how hard we worked. Although we seemed to be a little confused, Mr. Cordis, Miss Kientzle, Mr. Prettyman, Mr. Banner, Mr. Engelhorn, Mr. Hayden, Miss Gunsten, Mrs. Campbell, Miss Runkle, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks, and Mr. Saxton were there to help us blaze the trails. The first treasure we found was our class officers-President, Bob Perdelwitz, Vice- President, Winnie Callery, Secretary-Treasurer, Pat Allen, and Advisor, Mr. Banner. During our first year our adventures included a wiener roast and a Saint Patrick's Day Party with the Sophomores. We were proud to have Fred Lindquist crowned king of the carnival. Participation in the all-school picnic ended the first lap of our iourney. When we picked up the trail in the fall of 1946, we dis- covered that Miss Samsel had replaced Mrs. Brooks. That year Miss Gunsten became Mrs. Hunt and Miss Runkle, Mrs. Grundler. Under the guidance of our class officers, Bob Slane, President, Jeanne Coats, Vice-President, Gerry Smith, Sec- retary-Treasurer, and Mrs. Hunt, Advisor, we had our wiener roast with the Freshmen, won second prize on our Christmas float, and furnished twenty waiters and waitresses for the Junior-Senior Prom. The all-school picnic furnished the climax to our second year of treasure hunting. Picking up the reins again in September of 1947, we selected Mary Ann Smith, President, Doris Miller, Vice- President, Jeanne Coats, Secretary-Treasurer, and Miss Samsel, Advisor. We found that Miss Terry had replaced Mrs. Hunt and we had Mr. Roe instead of Mr. Banner. This was a prosperous year for us. We enioyed a wiener roast with the Seniors, presented the Junior Play, Ghost Wanted, which intrigued all who saw it, sold Christmas cards and wrappings, operated food stands, gave dances, the iewel being the Prom, bearing the theme of Hawaiian Melody, with music by Ted Mikita and his Tophatters. Fred Lindquist was crowned king and we were all proud to see a forty-niner occupying one of the thrones in the little grass hut. Another of our achievements was brought about by the Junior Jets, who captured both the boys' and girls' trophies in the Inter-class Tournament. Again, a picnic with the other classes ended a successful season. ln the fall of 1948, we came back to acquire more knowl- edge for our treasure chest. To guide us straight to our fortunes we chose Fred Lindquist, President, Bob Slane, Vice-President, Dick Carter, Secretary-Treasurer, and Miss Page sixty Kientzle, Advisor. We had Miss Roark replacing Miss Samsel, Mr. Jackson replacing Mr. Roe, and though we lost Mr. Hayden, we gained Miss Ters and Mr. Mursener. This year we shared a wiener roast with the Juniors and to make money to publish the MAROON, we sold stationery, greeting cards, napkins, scarves, T-shirts, sweat-shirts, had 'food stands, gave dances, sponsored the Stunt Show, the Inter-class Basketball Tournament, and the Amateur Show. The Minstrel Show, a new proiect in the school, contained songs, dances and iokes which furnished its audience an entertaining evening. Our class play, The Man on the Stairs, was well received. We were proud to have as members of our class the talented speech contestants and the boys who helped to make basketball history for P. C. H. S. Several of the male members of our class were the first boys to ever belong to F. H. A. Band and Glee Club also profited by the forty-niners, who gave their whole hearted support to them. The student and faculty picked Gleynafa Bawn as the D. A. R. winner of 1949. Baccalaureate was held in the gym May 22, Class Night followed on May 25, and on May 27, the forty-niners re- ceived their diplomas and bade farewell to P. C. H. S. Through the years many ioined our ranks-Ray Asbury, Barbara Belford, Pat Carr, Ruth Huffman, Ronnie King, Marilyn LaMay, Dorothy Libby, Bob Murnan, Elwood Peterson, Moe Schafer, Gerry Smith, and Harold Starkweather. We were sorry to lose Georgia Barrett, Don Baughman, Mary Ellen Beall, Barbara Belford, Virginia Burdick, Pat Carr, Mary Crooks, Ralph Reed, Bill Rewerts, Ray Rockel, Gerry Smith, and Leone Wilcox. ' Graduation will not be the end of our search for treasure in the shining form of knowledge. Under the influence of'the guidance received at P. C. H. S. our search will go on. Class Will Committee Shirley Biederbeck Ruth Huftman Jim Weaver Mark Hill CLASS PROPHECY We have gassed up our Rocket and are ready to take off for the nearest heavenly body, the Moon. Won't you come along with us? Our first stop here on the Moon will be Alphia Hohulin's Green Cheese Farm. There he was wearing a straw hat and overalls looking over his new crop. Alphia told us that he was having trouble with some of his animals and that he had iust called Dr. Glenn Martin, a veterinarian. As we con- tinue on down Airway 61 we see Don Dallinger hoeing potatoes on his Moonlite Acres Farm. As we talked to Don we realized that he had not changed a bit since our school days. While we were visiting with Don, the president of the M. V. A. fMars Valley Authority! came over for a chat. He was none other than Dean Burns. Dean told us that Madeline Ault owned the Mars Candy Company and that Bill Moody was Professor of Agriculture at the University of Mars. Time now to be on our way and continue on to Mercury, the nearest of the planets. Here we found Fred Lindquist coaching athletics at Mercury Electoral College. On his track team was a Weaver boy, the son of Princeville's former track star, Jim Weaver. Bob Slane and Don Dell had con- tinued their interests and were playing with the Graybeard Basketball Bouncers, a professional team. Moe Schafer made a scoring record with this same team during the past season. Deciding that it was time to eat, we stopped off at an attractive cafe, Berry's Bar-B-Q. The owner was of course Joan Berry. After a good rneal, we were under way again. Cruising down the airway, we heard a strange sound coming from our Rocket engine. We pulled into the nearest station and had a mechanic look over our ship. Here too, was Joe Blank, the Mercury dealer for Ford Rockets. And now off to Venus, the land of beautiful girls. First we stopped at the beauty shop to have a few touch-ups made. There, behind the counter was Ethel Burns, the owner of the Venus Beauty Salon. She told us that Wilma Wieland was now modeling advanced dress fashions for Richard Hackness, the famous dress designer. We visited Venus College and were warmly welcomed by President Winnie Callery. She told gs that Patsy Sniff was Professor of Vocal Music on her staff. The sky was growing dim and the streets were all ablaze with the glittering lights of the many theater marquees. On one we saw Shirley Biederbeck, Eminent Concert Pianist. We talked to Shirley iust a few minutes before her appearance. Further down the street we saw Gleynafa Bawn's name in lights. She was singing the lead in Carmen, so we decided to see the opera. Stopping backstage for a few seconds, we congratulated Gleynafa. As we turned to leave we met Mary Ann Smith, the director of Carmen. Across the street in the Opera House was Maurice Crain playing the leading part in The Lost Weekend. After the theatre we dropped into The Elwood Night Club, under the management of Elwood Peterson. Bob Perdel- witz and his Hot House Five were holding forth in the Elbow Room, and we listened with rapture to Tiny Harry James Asbury who was featured during the evening. Barbara Colgan's unique vocal styling of some popular songs was delightful. Now to the planet Pluto. Because one of our party in- curred a scratched finger, we sought immediate first aid at the Pluto County Hospital. Director and Chief Psychiatrist was none other than Anna May Noland. The head Nurse, Dolores Goffrier, took the patient into a room, and there we were greeted by Nurse Ruth Huffman. Pat Allen, a lab technician, made the blood test. We were relieved to find that the iniury was not serious. Time to gas up again, so we stopped at the nearest gas station. Bob Murnan stepped out from between the pumps. He told us that running gas stations was his hobby. He spent most of his time perfecting his new rocket. After filling up our tank, we again took to the air-this time to land on the planet Jupiter. As we passed over Spoon River we spotted Lee Murray sleeping on his iet-propelled raft while on duty as fish conservationist. On Jupiter our first stop was at the President's Mansion. There we were greeted by our old friend, Harold Starkweather, who was President of Jupiter. His personal secretary was Eileen Heinz. Stopping in at the local high school, we found Margaret DuBois instructing the Latin classes. She always was good in that subiect. Mariorie Peterson was one of the English teachers in the school. Mariorie told us that Dale Harlan was now associated with Jupiter's largest television station as chief sound effects man. As we sauntered on down the street we saw someone building a new house. lt was out of this world. lt was Harry Herrmann trying out his new carpenter tools. On to the corner and a turn to the left-Ohl Oh. a policeman's whistle. What's the matter, officer? Well, if it wasn't Norman Wieland. But that didn't cut any ice. We went to the police station iust the same. And there sitting on the bench was J. Richard Carter, Jupiter County Judge. Seeing that we were his former classmates, he fined us only' one hundred dollars apiece. Since we were almost out of money, we decided to start home. On our last stop before the Earth, we come to the planet Neptune. On a near by mountain top we saw a beautiful mansion. Having landed in an adiacent field, we walked up to the door and there to greet us was Betty Guth. She was iust waiting for Bob. We continued on across the planet Neptune until we came to the town of Dunlap. There seemed to be some sort of celebration going on there, so we stopped. It was the inauguration of the new mayor, Mark Hill. Singing at the inauguration was the heart-throb of the twentieth century, Frank Kraft. Winging our way out over the planet again, we came to the offices of the North Star, Neptune's leading newspaper. Behind the editor's desk was Jeanne Coats, her assistant was Phyllis Gruner. Joanne Ryan and Alberta Mitchell were the chief reporters. While we were in the office, Richard Emery, the Earth correspondent, sent in a wire that Ronnie King had iust been appointed General of the Earth Air Corps. Time to eat again. We spotted a nice Drive-In along the way so we pulled in and there was Mae Callery, the owner. Wintress Webster and Marilyn LaMay were the waitresses. After we left the Drive-In, one of the party acquired a splitting headache, so we stopped at the nearest Rexnone Drug Store for some aspirin. There behind the counter, as cheerful as ever, was Doris Miller. Now we were definitely on our way home. As we were going into space, we glanced back at a neon sign that read K. l. Murphy Real Estate and Insurance. Kay must be following in her father's footsteps. As we whizzed by the planets back to Earth, we caught a glimpse of Beverly Nuss traveling from planet to planet selling advertisements for The Neptune News.
