MAIN BUILDING The halls of the Princeville Community High School, in which we have spent many enjoyable hours, and the Gym wherein many of our activities took place will have a lasting mark on our memories. We hear rumors about the erection of a new building, but this is the P. C. H. S. that will always remain Hrst in our hearts. Page two The Home Economics House and the Farm Shop have played an important role in the high school life of many 1947 graduates, for it was in these buildings that they learned to be home- malcers and farmers. HOME EC. HOUSE ...N -' . ',1,5,,E FARM SHOP Page thrcc MR. MAHLON Nl. SAXTON DEDICATION P. C. H. Sfs only Band Nlaster started here as a grade and high school intructor in October, 1932. Since organizing the band at P. C. H. S., he has made a habit of winning first in District and Sectional competitions--and being advanced to State contests. In 1939 and 1940, first division was Won in State contests and in 1940 and 1946 we were given the Governor's award at the State Fair. His soloists have gone far, too, some winning State contests and one being advanced to the National contest in which a first division was Won. We know of no better qualified Band Master in this area either in education or in results with his students. We are proud to dedicate the 1947 Maroon to our friend and teacher, Mr. Mahlon M. Saxton. Page jimi BUS DRIVERS Mr. Harold Bouton, lVlr. Harry Heinz, Mr. Luther Mansheltl Two-thirds of the students of P. C. H. S. depend upon these laus drivers to transport them to and from school. The daily promptness :ind cheerful courtesy of these men gain the respect and affection of all the students. JANITOR Serving his first year .ns janitor following the retirement of Mr. llzirry VVill:1rd, who had served sinee 1924, Mr. llzirlzin lfmery is doing an excellent juli :ind is well liked by all the students. WHUOPEILV CLASS HISTORY Fifty-seven bulblets entered the portals of Princeville High School in the fall of 1943 and became imbedded in the field of learning. We felt small and insecure but with the help of our gardeners, Mr. Cordis, Mrs. Campbell, Mr. Boynton, Miss Kientzle, Mr. Riefsteck,,Miss Runkle, Mr. Prettyman, Miss Flynn and Mr. Saxton, we were safely planted and our roots began to take hold and develop in the darkness. We branched out and selected as our ofiicers, President, Fred Grunertg Vice-President, Phillip Adams, and Secretary-Treasurer, Miriam Hemmer. Our advisor was Miss Flynn. The Hrst social event of our high school life was the Freshman-Sophomore Wiener Roast held at North Creek. CWe did have plenty of catsup as well as lots of funll Our next adventure in the social ladder was the St. Patrick party which was like us- green . The climax of this season was an all-school picnic, a gala affair for all P. C. H. S. students. Thus we ended our Freshman year or shall we call it the Fall of our four seasons? In the fall of 1944, our roots had taken firm hold and we even began to send up our little green sprouts. This year Art Trowbridge was President, Donna Boyer, Vice- Presidentg Joe Stoller, Secretary-Treasurer, and Mr. Banner, advisor. New members of the faculty were Miss Gunsten for Miss Flynn, and Mr. Engelhorn, replacing Mr. Boynton. The teachers continued doing' a good job of landscaping and keeping the weeds away from our tender sprouts. We really didn't have anything to do but learn and grow. We captured second prize in the Stunt Show and some of our members were waitresses and waiters at the annual Junior- Senior Prom. And so ended our second season, The Winter . The next year our little green sprouts had developed into strong stems with nice foliage of green leaves. This was the year we began to bud and gain prestige around the school, in sports, in band, in music, and in the classroom. Our very capable officers were: Charles Miller, President Claude Rockel, Vice-President, and Joyce White, Secretary- Treasurer. Our advisor was Mrs. Campbell, who left during the year to join her husband. We then chose Miss Gunsten as our advisor for the rest of the year. Our cultivators were the same as the previous year except Mr. Hayden and Mr. Brooks, back from the army and Mrs. Brooks taking thc place of Mrs. Campbell. Under their care we began to bud. This year we won first prize in the Stunt Show. Didn't some of the girls make good dogs? We were proud of our Junior Play Don't Take My Penny . We combined business with pleasure with our card sales, food stand, and CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of 1947, do will and bequeath to the Freshman Class our ability to be absent from classes. Page .fixty-four dances. These merely led up to the big climax-THE PROM. On May 4th the gym was turned into The Pirates' Den when Seniors, Juniors and their guests en- joyed dancing to the music of Herman Hampy. With the end of our Junior year came the close of our third season, The Spring . The following fall, 1946, we had developed into strong plants with a firm network of both roots and branches leading all directions to assimilate all the learning possible. With Joyce White as President, Dick Noland as Vice- President, Claude Rockel as Secretary-Treasurer and Miss Samsel as advisor we started our final year at good old P. C. H. S. The only new face in our garden was Miss Samsel who replaced Mr. Brooks. Two of our teachers changed their names when they became recent brides- Miss Runkle became Mrs. Grundler and Miss Gunsten became Mrs. Hunt. We Howered out with a wiener roast at Jubilee and then settled down to the task of earning money for the publication of a bigger and better MAROON. Our class sponsored stationery and card sales, pennant sales, dances, a Stunt Night, an Inter-class Basketball Tourney, a Carnival, and an Amateur Show. Our class play Spring Fevery' drew a large crowd and many favorable comments. Were you one of the many who jumped every time the gun went off? Our class was proud to send con- testants to the state in both music and public speaking contests. Baccalaureate was held in the gym May 25, then came Class Night and at last Graduation on May 29. And with graduation comes the end of our last season, The Summer in our garden of learning at P. C. H. S. We have become attached to our native soil and gardeners during these four short years but must make way for others. We shall be uprooted but shall keep, on blooming and absorbing knowledge, trying to make the world a better place in which to live. Some of the transplanted ones were: LOST Lorretta Barrett, Mary Beam, Jessie Begner, Louise Gould, Virginia Graves, Gordon Green, Everett Harmon, Rosalee Hume, William Kelly, Orville King, Geraldine Leonhardt, Shirley Miller, Joe Oppe, Warren Oppe, Ruth Sxtoecker, Joe Stoller, Della Streitmatter, Joe Weber, Marilyn elch. CLASS PROPHECY Ten years had winged their weary flight since the class cf '47 departed from P. C. H. S. on that memorable 29th day of May. Upon arriving home from my office job, thinking of school days and lonesome for my old friends, I picked up a current events paper hoping I might find some news of them. The first article that caught my eye was one about a new colony being established in the Antarctic. As I glanced through the first paragraph, I discovered to my amazement that the article had been written by an old classmate, Rosemary Schelkopf. It seemed as though she was sending home current reports of de- velopments in the colony. Without reading further, I threw down the ,p-aper, phoned my office for a month's leave of absence, got a reservation on the next plane leaving for the Antarctic, and was soon on my way. Settling down on the plane for a pleasant journey, I heard a familiar voice saying, Would you like a pillow? Turning my head to answer I looked straight into the big blue eyes of Leona Smith. We had a nice visit and I learned from her that Cliff Scott, another '47 graduate, was the pilot of this huge plane. When we landed at Antarctica after a fine trip I went forward to see Clifford and he asked me to accompany hirn as he checked in from his flight. He introduced me to the Airline Superintendent, Bob Streitmatter, who called a cab for me. Upon entering the cab I recognized the driver as Albert Wys, head of the Model-A Taxi Agency. The cab drew up in front of the Waldorf, Jr. and as I walked into the lobby, I was warmly greeted by Bernice Wagenbach, the owner. She called for a bellhop and after a somewhat lengthy interval who I, Marge Morris, do will and bequeath my ability to swing and sway to Helga Werner. ' I, Albert Wys, do will and bequeth my timid ways to Fred Lindquist. Class of '47 should approach by Wilkie Wilson. Bernice told me he was manager of the bellhops. Deciding I'd like to purchase some land in this flourish- ing colony, I went to see the famous lawyer,.Mr. Robert Callery, about the details. Soon a pleasant voice was saying, May I help you? This voice belonged to Velma Stewart, Mr. Callery's receptionist. While I was conferring with Mr. Callery, the receptionist announced that His Honor, the Mayor, wished an audience. Mr. Callery said, What an excellent opportunity for you to meet the Mayor. I'm sure he'll be delighted to show you around our fair city. When the Mayor entered I was surprised to recognize Elmer Shaw, still as slow and carefree as ever. After the men had finished their business, the Mayor and I left and started about the city. As we stolled down Shaw Avenue, we passed the Cold Wave Beauty Parlor and noticed that its proprietor was Betty Streitmatter. Going in to visit for a while, we found a distinguished looking lady under the drier. Through our conversation I learned it was the socialite, Cecelia Dallinger, who had come to the colony after being jilted by a fellow from Elgin, Illinois. As our conversation was drawing to a close, we heard an explosion. Going to investigate we saw that it was Tom Foster's Pharmacy. He had been concocting a new cosmetic destined to go over with a big BANG! As we were crossing the street, an ambulance came careening toward the scene of the accident. Even before it stopped we recognized Tom Fogerty's driving. As the ambulance stopped, a nurse scurried forth to attend the injured. By her calm, efficient handling of the patient, Tom Foster, we Page :ixly-five knew the nurse must be Maxine Kelley. Tom Fogerty asked us to ride to the hospital with him and we agreed. just as we were ready to leave who should rush up but Phil Adams with his tape measure. But at just this moment Tom Foster opened his eyes, much to the disappointment of Phil, the local undertaker. We were soon at the hospital-the Hanson private hospital, owned and operated by Wilfred Hanson and his wife, the former Donna Boyer. Tom Foster was examined by Dr. Hanson who recommended immediate X-ray to be given by Iola Doubet, hospital X-ray Technician. While Iola was preparing the X-ray machine, Miriam I-Iemmer, Laboratory technician, performed several tests as to the condition of Mr. Foster. At the suggestion of Mrs. Hanson, we started a tour of the hospital. One of the First rooms we entered was occupied by Yardbird Goffrier and Buck Private Miller of the U. S. Marines. We noticed that the nurse, Evelyn Gruner, seemed to be giving special attention to the first patient. These Marines were recuperating from a desperate battle. They had been wounded defending the seal and penguin reservation of Art Trowbridge from the polar bears. Realizing that I had not eaten in ages, the Mayor took me immediately to the kitchen where a delicious meal was prepared by Ruth Gruner, the hospital dietician. She dis- continued posting menus to do this especially for us. The climate dilfercing somewhat from that to which I'd been accustomed, I thought it a good idea to shop for a few necessities. Upon entering a large building, I noticed the sign Cheesman's Department Store. Mayor Shaw ex- plained that Bee had done quite well for herself, this being the largest store in Antarctica. To our right was a large crowd of ladies attending a fashion revue. We would have passed by, had I not recognized the familiar form of Dorothy Camp modeling a gorgeous gown. I complimented her on it and she told me it was an original creation by JoAnne Purcell. At the mention of her name JoAnne appeared and we had a short but pleasant visit. She suggested that I meet her for dinner that evening at the Igloo Club, Agreeing to meet her at 7 and thanking the Mayor for his kindness I returned to my hotel room for a rest. While waiting for JoAnne that evening I discovered a sign announcing that the orchestra of the evening was to be Freddie Grunert and his Antarctic Polars. The featured singer was Marge Morris. At this timesJoAnne came and we went in to our table to enjoy an evening reminiscent of days at P. C. H. S. ' I was awakened the next morning by the clear, ringing tone of the school bell and realized that it was time to get up for the day. On my way out I stopped at the desk to inquire the way to the telephone office. I wished to call home and tell my em,ployer in America that I liked the Antarctic colony so well I was planning to stay. Upo.i entering the telephone office, I was surprised to find that the switchboard operator was Betty Sniff. While I was waiting for my call to be put through, she told me that the noted lecturer, Mr. Richard N. Noland, was to speak at the high school that day. After finishing my call I set out in the direction of the school but was delayed a bit Page .rixty-.fix by 'a stop at the corner candy Store. I had learned that PhyllisAKirtley was the owner and I stopped to chat for a minute. ,From there I proceeded directly to the school and after some inquiry found my way to the oflice. The office girl,' Martha Peterson, informed me that the lecture was about to begin and suggested that I could find a seat in the faculty section. As I started to leave, she asked if I'd be .passing the post office during the morning. When I said Yes 'she gave me a letter and asked me to mail it for her. Glancing at the address, I saw it was headed for Toulon, Illinois. I As'I approached the faculty seats, I heard someone calling to me. Sure enough, it was Joyce White. From our conversation, I gathered that she was having difficulty collecting Trig class papers on time. She asked me if l recognized the lady sitting next to me. When I said No she, told me it was Ruth Ann Oakes, the Home Ec. teacher. Ruth Ann had changed and was very distinguished looking with 'quite a few gray hairs. These had come, I was told, from worry over the dangerous flights of Cliff Scott, the airline pilot. Miss White informed me that one member of the faculty was missing-Coach Claude Rockel, who was working with his team in preparation for the championship game that afternoon. The game was to be played at Rocky Field' and Joyce cordially invited me to come. , When the lecture was over I continued my journey about town. As I was walking down Main Street, I saw a sign, which read Hietter's Polar Market. The name Hietter sounded familiar so I decided to investigate. As soon as,I entered the store I saw a familiar face and remembered the name was Earl Hietter. He was sitting with his, feet up on the counter reading a newspaper. As I drew closer to the counter he laid the paper down. While we were conversing about old times I saw the headline of thepaper-POLE NOT REACHED! I inquired as to the story behind it and Earl told me that two men, Gene Peterson and Glenn DuBois, were trying to reach the South Pole.,They wanted the pole to add to the collection which they had in their museum. In the same paper I noticed a comic strip, The Adventures on Mark Hilltop, drawn by the artist Juanita Short. Earl knew much news about all the graduates of '47 and I spent quite some time talking to him. I finally left the store and upon entering the lobby of myzhotel my memory was aroused by the sight of a bright red shirt. It certainly looked like jack Markgraf. Why, it was'jack! He turned and, when he saw me, came hurrying over. Meatball had become the coach of a pro- fessional' basketball team and was just then enjoying a well 'earned vacation on money which the team had earned-. After talking a little while to jack, I went to my hotel room. I now realized that I could never be happy anywhere but in the Antarctic. I took a piece of paper and wrote- WANTED: A position as typist by Dorothy Callery, a 1947 graduate of P. C. H. S. I put this in an envelope and sent it to the ad department of the local paper. Then I relaxed, knowing that I, too, would soon have a place in this successful colony of '47'ers. nv. X wx VAN islinilive UUlfUl+S FINM TIIE CAMERA 0F 319 S. JEFFEI 1891-W. F. Boyes, Principal.
