CLASS POEM SAMUEL GARDNER WELLES, JR. Our last spring dwindled to its last month, last day, The hour of parting nears ; Now we possess but memory of four years, Although we linger while we may, To smoke last pipes together—see them, hurled, Shatter, as will our little world; To draw out our last singing—but the bell Soon strikes the notes that say farewell. And we know, We who have seen the seasons come and go, Thatiyear on-ftar year, Seniors in turn will hold The steps that seniors held of old, Nor know, nor care that we were here. Yet will the ivy flourish as springs pass, Magnolias and dogwood bloom again, And violets, star-sprinkled in the grass; Still rooms will glow with firelight when the rain Slants in a low tattoo against the pane; Gray towers rose-flushed in the breathless dawn, The visible Princeton will remain, And grow more lovely as slow years roll on, None of her time-wrought charm or quiet beauty gone. But as we leave this sentient place We find that in our thoughts we trace, Lighting odd corners of the mind As scattered cigarettes glow while we sing, Not what is seen, but sensed here: bickering, Sun-bathing, study, pledges signed, Forming of friendships, Commons food, Chapel and George’s, Prince campaigns, Proctors and precepts, movies booed, Bull sessions, duckboards, autumn rains, Room-drawings, hour tests, deans and drinks, Body-building, proms and dinks, Theses, football, lectures, duns, Triangle jokes and sessions at Hun’s.
