PHY ICS Last year, Dr. H. D. Smyth, author of the Well-known MAtomic Energy for Military Purposes, retired as Chair- man of the Physics Department to become one of the five members of the Atomic Energy Commission, and Profes- sor A. G. Shenstone has since succeeded him .... The Department has an abundance of modern equipment at its disposal in the Palmer Physical Laboratory. This year marked the construction of a new cyclotron for splitting the nuclei of atomic particles, after the ruin of the original one by fire last year. Lately the Department has been more in demand as a center of research in nuclear physics and cosmic rays than as an undergraduate center of learn- ing .... Ten seniors are enrolled in the department this year. About half of these will go on to graduate Work and from there enter into either teaching or research. Maritain, prominent Cath- olic philosopher, gave a series of lectures at the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies in Toronto, while the Uni- versity Press published a new book by W. A. Kaufmann, and WT. T. Stace finished out a term as President of the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Associa- tio11. Lord Bertrand Russell was the speaker at a public lec- ture sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and the Spencer Trask Lecture Foundation on November 10, talk- ing on the subject of NMind and Matterl' to an overflow crowd in lVIcCosh 50. ,lust preceding his lecture word was received that Lord Russell had been selected as a recipient of the l950 Nobel Prize in literature.
