ROY DICKINSON WELCH With only ten departmental students, the Music Depart- ment itself is small and fairly specialized, but strives to make music available to undergraduates through its large underclass courses. Wllile departmental students do not necessarily prepare for a career i11 music, the training is such that they may do so. Graduates are prominent in music criticism, radio, and teaching .... The Acting Chairman is J. Merrill Knapp, a11d prominent members of the de- partment include Bohuslav Martinu, famed Czech com- poser, and Oliver Strunk, musicologist and former Chief of the Music Division of the Library of Congress .... The department also feels a responsibility for the various un- dergraduate musical organizations, and their directors are members of the Music faculty. Naturally there is a close bond between the concert life of the Princeton community and the department. The Friends of Music and the Prince- toll University Concerts are both connected with the Music Department .... The University is mourning the loss of Roy D. Welch, Music Departmental Chairman, who died this fall. Ml! I0 27

PHY ICS Last year, Dr. H. D. Smyth, author of the Well-known MAtomic Energy for Military Purposes, retired as Chair- man of the Physics Department to become one of the five members of the Atomic Energy Commission, and Profes- sor A. G. Shenstone has since succeeded him .... The Department has an abundance of modern equipment at its disposal in the Palmer Physical Laboratory. This year marked the construction of a new cyclotron for splitting the nuclei of atomic particles, after the ruin of the original one by fire last year. Lately the Department has been more in demand as a center of research in nuclear physics and cosmic rays than as an undergraduate center of learn- ing .... Ten seniors are enrolled in the department this year. About half of these will go on to graduate Work and from there enter into either teaching or research. Depart- mental studies are either experimental or theoretical. ALLEN COODRICH SHENSTONE Back Row: A. S. Wightman, C. N. Whyte, R. Sherr-Third Row: W. Franzen, B. C. Carlson, W. C. Griffith, E. P.
