HARRY HAMMOND HESS GEOIOGY To those who are drawn to the outdoor life, the Geology Department offers the opportunity to study nature first- hand .... Besides turning out trained technicians in spe- cialized fields, the department gives courses covering a wide variety of subjects: the evolution of life, period by period, as shown by the fossil recordg the development of man and his ancestors in the ulast ten minutes of evolutiong the study of minerals and the effect of such resources on world affairsg the origin of earthquakesg the chemistry and mechanics of volcanoes. These and other similar problems furnish infinite possibilities for those who enter the Geol- ogy Department .... Mr. H. H. Hess succeeded Mr. A. F. Buddington as departmental chairman in the fall. Wesley Frank Craven has been named Edwards Professor of American History, and as a specialist in colonial history, joins these distin- guished ranks .... The members of the department are preparing a Marine Corps :History of Amphibious Opera- tions which will be published soon a11d will be the first detailed history of amphibious operations ever compiled. HISTORY Qfmalcl 2 Wledam '09 Judge Medina made two speaking appearances at Prince- ton during the year, first giving a talk to the Graduate Council in the fall on Wfhe Princeton Class as a Study in Democracy, then making the principal address at the Se- nior Banquet in the winter.
