HUGH STOTT TAYLOR CHEMISTRY Eighteen seniors and thirty juniors chose the subject of chemistry for their departmental study. This department is the oldest one in the natural science field, and there are approximately 1,000 students taking courses under its auspices .... The new lecture-experiment method is used for underclass courses and is best exemplified by the man- ner in which professors Alyea and Turkevich conduct their courses .... All the members of the faculty, under the chairmanship of Dr. Taylor, conduct research on various chemical problems. Two notable research achievements are those of Professors Furman and Wallis. The former, working i11 analytical chemistry, did the chemical anal- yses for the Manhattan Project, While the latter was one of a team that synthesized the new wonder-drug, cortisone. Back Row: C. The students, a majority of whom are pre-meds, find courses ranging from elementary biology and botany to biological chemistry alld comparative anatomy of vertebrates. In the junior year each embryo biologist writes a monograph based on the literature of some pertinent biological topic .... The senior thesis, however, may be in the form of the lind- ings of a laboratory research experiment instead of the customary library research project. This experiment is often done in conjunction with a member of the faculty. . . . There are now four fields of faculty research: prob- lems in growth and developmentg living light or bio- luminescenceg hormones and general physiologyg and prob- lems in genetics. 6'lAS ICS' gmac imma This year saw the establishment of a Jazz Club under the direction of Mr. Ulanov, an Instructor in the English Department. Lectures were given regularly throughout the year, at which famous jazz recordings were played and discussed. The Classics Department has two d1st111ct aims i11 offering its selection of courses. The primary aim is to provide the student with a firm grounding in the languages of Greece and Rome, and the secondary function, to provide a good battery of courses in the Classics without requiring use of the languages themselves .... In addition to the eight departmental students, a great many men who are major- ing in other fields of the humanities and the social sciences take correlated courses under the Classics Department .... Wihitney J. Oates ,25, who also heads the Special Program in the Humanities, is Chairman of the Classics Department, whose faculty includes F. R. B. Godolphin, Dean of the College.
