The main function of the department is graduate in- struction and research, although there are some under- graduates taking advanced courses .... For those students who wish to broaden their knowledge of the heavenly bodies a distributional course is offered. The 110 students taking this course have access to both the 9M-inch tele- scope and to the new Peyton ffyz-inch telescope, the gift of Bernard Peyton '17, The 23-inch telescope located be- hind Palmer Stadium is reserved for the faculty and graduate students. Professors Spitzer and Schwarzschild have spent several years in theoretical research dealing with the constitution of the stars and the galaxies, and each spends several months at the Mount Wilson Observatory in California in alternating years. Professor Stewart for some years has been more interested in applying methods of astronomy and the physical sciences in general to the relations of people with one another. This new sub- ject of Msocial physicsi' is gradually gaining recognition. . . . The department is mourning the loss of Professor Pierce, who died suddenly during the summer. ASTRONOMY 17

In addition to ministering to its own sixty-Hve depart- mental students and providing courses for undergraduates wishing merely a cultural background, the Art and Archae- ology Department has been associated in the Special Hu- manities, American Civilization, and Creative Arts pro- grams .... For these reasons the Art Department has about fourteen hundred elections a year .... Departmental graduates have gone mainly into business and the profes- sions, but a number, after graduate work, have become art critics and museum curators. The School of Architec- ture, a division of the department, offers preparation in the physical as well as aesthetic factors of architectural design, and its graduates have become professional archi- tects after passing the state examinations .... Members of the faculty have been actively engaged in various art studies .... A. M. Friend has bee11 directing the Byzantine studies at Dumbarton Oaks, G. Rowley has been working ill Chinese and medieval art, R. Stilwell has studied Greek and Roman theater architecture, and E. B. Smith, depart- mental chairman, is an authority on architectural history. The students, a majority of whom are pre-meds, find courses ranging from elementary biology and botany to biological chemistry alld comparative anatomy of vertebrates. In the junior year each embryo biologist writes a monograph based on the literature of some pertinent biological topic .... The senior thesis, however, may be in the form of the lind- ings of a laboratory research experiment instead of the customary library research project. This experiment is often done in conjunction with a member of the faculty. . . . There are now four fields of faculty research: prob- lems in growth and developmentg living light or bio- luminescenceg hormones and general physiologyg and prob- lems in genetics.
