PROFESSOR BUDDINGTON DEAN E1s1aNHAR'r DEAN Wicics 20 PROFESSOR H. DEVV. SMYTH on Campus. Psychology majors have on num- erous occasions found positions giving and interpreting intelligence tests at Army Recep- tion Centers. More than any other department the School of Engineering was faced with a duty which it had to discharge to the nation and to Prince- ton. Engineers were needed in the Army and the Navy. They are necessary in private indus- try nas well to marshall the forces of produc- tion. Princeton's School of Engineering en- deavors to turn out more than men with only technical knowledge by requiring all engineers to take a basic economics course and preferably a course in public speaking to enable them to put across their ideas in front of an audience. The School of Engineering is divided into seven sections, Aeronautical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Geological and Basic Engineering. Newest of these sections of the

PROFESSOR H S TAYIOIR The work of the Geology Department was curtailed by the forced abandonment of Summer School of Geology which formerly conducted a tour through the Rockies and the Far West. However, the normal number of courses were offered and field work was done in the Delaware Water Gap and points of geological interest in New Jersey. The Mathematics Department added several elementary math courses in an effort to prepare students for army and navy calcu- lation. Mathematics 108b, which combines an introduction to coordinate geometry with differential and integral calculus, was instituted for first year engineers. Optional lectures were given on the slide rule and special math courses made available to those wishing them immediately for government service. The Physics Department naturally works in very close cooperation with the Department of Mathematics, those of its departmental majors selecting to do theoretical work in physics drawing many courses from the latter department. Many students from other depart- ments took courses in elementary physics this year in connection with naval reserve programs. To Eno Hall the Psychology Department attracts students from all departments, .Psychology 201-202 dealing with normal and abnormal psychology being one of the 111OSt popular courses 19

PROFESSOR Lmscrer D ' P ia WL!! Wm Needh .... DEAN Comm' r A W.-it If N School of Engineering is that in Aeronautical Engineering estab- lished in the spring term of 1942 under the direction of Professor Daniel C. Sayre. In addition to the undergraduate work leading to the Degree of B. S. in Aeronautical Engineering, graduate work is offered in the fields of design, research and transport. lt is a generally admitted fact that the student enrolled in any one of these sections finds that his is a hard life, for he carries many more hours on his schedule card than does the normal arts student. But engineers are often envied by B.A.'s in these times, possessing as they do 2-A deferment ratings with their Selective Service Boards which in many cases will enable them to complete their college education. However the engineer knows that his is as great a responsibility as any in the front line and one which he l11LlSt meet fully to justify his continued attendance at college. Both during and after the war more and more engineers will be required and the School of Engineering at Princeton is attempting to anticipate these needs. 21 DocToR S70RK
