The Department of Modern Languages and Litera- tures is one of the largest departments in the University with courses in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. 435 1, PROFESSOR THOMAS PRoFEssoR GREENE I-Iunianities is the Philosophy Department. Three broad fields of concentration are oH:ered to the philosophy major and he is also encouraged to take as many courses as possible in the five other departments which go to 'make up the Divisional program. In its third year, the Department of Religious History has added several courses to its curriculum and is attracting many students from other departments who wish a background of the Christian position in order to understand its place in the modern World. The Department operates on the Harrington Spear Paine Foundation and is conducted by Professor George F. Thomas and instructor Dr. A. L. Jamison. Both the Politics Department and the Department of Economic and Social Institutions have stressed AIHCIICS-1,5 part in the World struggle and the part it can logically play after the peace. The School of Public and International Affairs draws upon the resources of the above two departments plus the History Depart- ment to offer a Well-balanced plan of study of interest to the student contemplating a career in public service. While it may not be selected as a department of upperclass concentration, the Department of Oriental Languages and Litera- tures greatly increased in importance during the last year, enlarg4 ing the number of courses available in Chinese and instituting elementary japanese for qualined students.
