This procession, headed by President Hibben and Fx-President Taft, included the trus- tees, faculty, graduate and undergraduate students of Princeton University and eminent scholars and educators from the world over. 'While this distinguished throng were being seated, the University Choir sang Veni Creator Spiritusf, by Palestrina. After tracing academic history from its start in the t'welfth century to the present century, Dean West said in part: 'fft is forty years since joseph Henry advocated the suggestion of John Miller to establish here a College of Discoverers-a late reflection of Lord Bacon's august conception of the House of Solomon-and it is nearly forty years since President McCosh introduced graduate studies. It is seventeen years this day since President Patton announced the desire of the newly christened Princeton University to secure this Graduate College. XrVyman, '48, that went into the foundation of the Graduate College. Then followed addresses of congratulation delivered by the delegates of foreign and domestic universities. Professor Alois Riehl, recently Rector in the University of Berlin, bore congratulations to Princeton from Germany. Following him, spoke Professor Arthur Shipley, Mas- ter of Christ's College, University of Cambridge, and A. D. Godley, Fellow of Magdalen College and Public Orator in the University of Gxford. For the oldest university in the world, the University of Paris, Professor Emile Boutroux, French Academician and Director of the Fondation Thiers, was the spokesman. President Nich- olas Murray Butler, of Columbia University, representing the American colleges and universities, delivered the final congratulations. - Wliat was, from a national standpoint, a most important part of the exercises was the acceptance by the University of the national monument to Grover Cleveland, in the shape of a magnificent memorial tower, which 11

Richard V. Lindabury, as President of the Cleveland Monument Association, turned the tower over to the trustees of Prince- ton. President Hibben accepted for Princeton this gift of the American people. A new and magnanimous note was struck in American politics when Wfilliam Howard Taft, a Republican ex-President of the United States, paid a glowing tribute to Grover Cleveland, a Democratic predecessor, in the Memorial Address. Thus was dedicated Princeton's Graduate College, the first institution of its kind in America, a new shrine to the goddess of learning, a shrine of remarkable beauty, striking htness, and of fine and high appealf' , .J r' egg:- Q5 12
