I The Graduate School Graduate studies were first introduced into Princeton in 1877 by President McCosh, and were subsequently put in charge of a' Faculty Committee on University Degrees and Fellowships. The Graduate Department thus organized was reorganized as The Graduate School at a stated meeting of the Board of Trustees held Decem- ber I3, IQOO. At this meeting a Plan of Organization of the Graduate School was adopted and Professor An- drew F. West was elected the hrst Dean of the Graduate School. The Plan of Grganization went into effect in September, IQOI. The Dean has associated with him an Advisory Committee of the Faculty. There is also a Standing Committee of the Trustees on The Graduate School, ,fx ...R V .,-f,-.' V, , 1+-.f. . f . . --4 . . .T-'rr-. II The Graduate House at Mervvick In order to provide a suitable academic home for at least a portion of the graduate students, the e Merwick, a beautiful place of eleven acres on Bayard Lane, was secured this last summer. The lar comfortable house was thoroughly overhauled and completely furnished, and a fund was raised to help the running expenses of the first three years of the experiment. Professor Howard Crosby Butler, yQ2, is dence and has general charge. Twelve men have been admitted to residence and six more to the table, as many as can be comfortably accommodated. It is not intended that Merwick shall take on anything state of ge and toward in resi- -about of the character ofa boarding house, a club, or a hotel, but shall preserve at all times the aspect of a quiet, studious home. The experiment is working most satisfactorily. The men who have been admitted realize the special advantages provided and co-operate willingly in promoting the purposes for which the Graduate House has been planned. So far as I am aware, the experiment at Merwiclc is of a kind untried before in any American University. lt is an attempt to solve the difficult problem of the residential life of graduate students. VVhile entirely American in spirit, it is nevertheless modeled to some extent after the life in the smaller Oxford Halls. . III The Proposed Graduate College The Graduate House is an experiment which looks in the direction of the much desired Graduate College. This is not the place to describe in detail what is meant by the proposed Graduate College, more than to say in the words of President VVilson that on the side of university growth it is undoubtedly our hrst and most obvious need, and the necessary crown and completion of the curriculum. Its great importance has long been evi- dent to the authorities of the University. As Ex-President Cleveland, Chairman of the Committee, put it in his report to the Trustees last June: 'cYour Committee ventures to express the hope that the complete equipment of the Graduate School may appear to be of such importance, that in some way the generosity of the friends of Princeton may be moved to contribute to its success as the surest and safest avenue now open to the Universitvs lasting prestige and usefulness. - 31
