Andrew F. West, Ph.D., LL.D., Hon. D. Litt. COX0nD Professor West was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, on May 17, 1853. He was educated at private schools and graduated from Princeton in the class of 1874. Prom 1874 to 1883 he was instructor in Classics at schools, and in 1883 became Professor of Latin at Princeton, and is still holding this position. He was Sec- retary of the Sesquicentennial celebration in 1896, at which time Princeton took the title of Princeton University. He has been Dean of the Graduate School at Princeton since 1901, and is chairman of the American School of Classical Studies in Rome. In 1874 he became Classical Fellow, and in 1882 received the degree of Ph.D., and in 1897 of LL.D., and in 1902 was given the degree of D.Litt. by the University of Oxford. Among Professor West's publications are an edition of the plays of Terence, 1888, Philobiblon of Rich- ard de Bury, 1889 3 Alcuin, 1892, and a Latin Grammar for Schools, 1902. He has also written many papers on classical and educational subjects. 7 8
