.-v TH FIVE UN 5 - , 5 4 Q Second Princeton By this time Captain Stockton was a member of the Senate, and primarily through his ef- forts, the second Princeton was rebuilt in the Boston Yard from timber and parts from the Orig- inal Princeton. She was First Princeton Named for the home town of Captain Stockton, USN, who su- pervised all construction. Built in Philadelphia in 1842 and was the first screw steam war ves- sel ever built. In' addition to her steam engines she was ship rigged, spreading 14,413 feet of canvas. One of her iron guns was called the Peacemaker which later exploded, killing five persons, more notable of which were Abel P. 'QQ-fn. STATES SHIPS PRINCETON Third Princeton The third Princeton was acom- posite gunboat of 1,000 tons with six guns and was referred to as Gunboat Number 13. She was built in 1897 at Camden, New Jersey and was commissioned one month after the outbreak of the war with Spain. She saw immediate duty in both the At- lantic and the Pacific, sailing for the Philippines by way of Gibraltar and the Mediter- ranean. She remained in the Philippines until 1903 when she reported back to the Pacific Coast for operations. F rom 1911 to 1915 she was a station ship at Tutuila, then upon re- turning to San Francisco, she operated on the Pacific Coast until 1919 when she was sold. Q 'SN 'Sf 2 ,Q ve t x A Fourth Princeton Named after the Revolutionary War Battle of Princeton and designated CVL-23. Built in Camden, New Jerseyg Commis- sioned in 1943 and sponsored by Mrs, Harold Dodds, wife of the President of Princeton Uni- versity. Was one of nine ships converted to an aircraft carrier from a cruiser hull and saw al- rno st continuous action' in the Pacific until she was sunk during the Battle for Leyte Gulf in October 1944, It was during this battle that Captain John Hoskins, who had just reported aboard as prospectivecom- manding officer, was injured and lost the lower part of his right leg, Captain Hoskins was later to become the first Com- manding Officer of the Present USS PRINCETON. aw
