168 OPEHATIQ JACKSTAY Operation JACKSTAY, prosecuted by ele- ments of the Seventh Fleet's Amphibious Ready Group and spearheaded by Princeton,be- gan shortly after daybreak on March 26. The attack was launched simultaneously from the USS ALAMO and USS PICKAWAY in Mike boats and from PRINCETON in helos. Twelve hundred Marines poured ashore and began se- curing the Rung Sat Special Zone which guards the river approaches to Saigon. The Long Tau River is the only waterway into Saigon large enough to handle deep draft commercial and military ships. The overall objective of Operation J ACKSTAY way to clear the Viet Cong from this area and, thus, prevent future attacks on friendly shipping going to Saigon. JACKSTAY was successfully concluded on April 6 and, up to that time, it was the far- thest south U.S. troops had been since the be- ginning of the Viet Nam War.
