Captain Tazewell Shepard,Jr. f Present Commanding Officer Captain.Tazewell Taylor Shepard, Jr. as- A sumed command of the amphibious assault ship USS Princeton at Cam Rahn Bay, Viet Nam on June 16, 1966. Captain Shepard came to Princeton with a distinguished naval career highlighted by the years 1961 to 19.64 when he served as Naval Aide to the late President John F. Kennedy. A native of Mobile, Alabama, Captain Shepard is a 1942 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy. As a junior officer, he saw consider- able action in the Pacific Theatre of World War Two aboard the cruiser USS San Francisco. In the process, the Captain was awarded the Navy Cross, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with nine battle stars, ' In the immediate post-war years, the Cap- tain underwent flight training at the.Naval Air Stations at Corpus Christi, Texas and Pensacola, Florida. From 1949 until 1952, Captain Shepard attended the Naval Post Graduate School and the University of California at Los Angeles where he received his Master of Science degree in Applied Physics. From then until 1960 he un- dertook a variety of assignments, most of them in Naval Aviation, including command of Heavy AttackSquadron 15. In 1964 Captain Shepard completed his tour in the White House and was given his first com- mand at sea--the fleet oiler USS, Aucilla. From 1965 until assuming command of Princeton, the Captain served with the Office of the Secretary of the Navy in Washington, D. C., where he was a member of the Retention Task Force. 4 Among his other achievements, the Captain is the author of a book published in November, 1965, entitled JOHN F. KENNEDY, MAN OF THE SEA. Captain Shepard is married to the former Julia Ann Sparkman of Huntsville, Alabama, daughter of Senator and Mrs. John Sparkman. They have one son, Tazewell III, born January 8, 1954.
