FIFTH PRINCETO Built to replace her namesake, the CVL-23, the fifth Princeton was constructed in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and she was commissioned in November 1945. Upon her launching, she was again christened by Mrs. Harold Dodds, wife of the President of Princeton University. Designated CV-37 when commissioned, she was re-designated CVS-37 in 1956 and in April 1959 whe was desig- nated LPH-5. Present Princeton was in Reserve and out of com- mission when the Korean conflict broke and she was the first capital ship to be activated from the Reserve Fleet. She had the distinction of going into combat with more than 75 percent of her crew being reservists re-called from civilian life to active duty, and her first air group aboard was a Reserve Air Group from Seattle. It was during Korea that Princeton catapults launched jet fighters with bomb loads for the first time in Naval History, and it was also from Princeton's deck that the torpedo strike against the Hwachon Dam complex in central Korea was launched.
