STATES SHIPS PRINCETON Third Princeton The third Princeton was acom- posite gunboat of 1,000 tons with six guns and was referred to as Gunboat Number 13. She was built in 1897 at Camden, New Jersey and was commissioned one month after the outbreak of the war with Spain. She saw immediate duty in both the At- lantic and the Pacific, sailing for the Philippines by way of Gibraltar and the Mediter- ranean. She remained in the Philippines until 1903 when she reported back to the Pacific Coast for operations. F rom 1911 to 1915 she was a station ship at Tutuila, then upon re- turning to San Francisco, she operated on the Pacific Coast until 1919 when she was sold. Q 'SN 'Sf 2 ,Q ve t x A Fourth Princeton Named after the Revolutionary War Battle of Princeton and designated CVL-23. Built in Camden, New Jerseyg Commis- sioned in 1943 and sponsored by Mrs, Harold Dodds, wife of the President of Princeton Uni- versity. Was one of nine ships converted to an aircraft carrier from a cruiser hull and saw al- rno st continuous action' in the Pacific until she was sunk during the Battle for Leyte Gulf in October 1944, It was during this battle that Captain John Hoskins, who had just reported aboard as prospectivecom- manding officer, was injured and lost the lower part of his right leg, Captain Hoskins was later to become the first Com- manding Officer of the Present USS PRINCETON. aw FIFTH PRINCETO Built to replace her namesake, the CVL-23, the fifth Princeton was constructed in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and she was commissioned in November 1945. Upon her launching, she was again christened by Mrs. Harold Dodds, wife of the President of Princeton University. Designated CV-37 when commissioned, she was re-designated CVS-37 in 1956 and in April 1959 whe was desig- nated LPH-5. Present Princeton was in Reserve and out of com- mission when the Korean conflict broke and she was the first capital ship to be activated from the Reserve Fleet. She had the distinction of going into combat with more than 75 percent of her crew being reservists re-called from civilian life to active duty, and her first air group aboard was a Reserve Air Group from Seattle. It was during Korea that Princeton catapults launched jet fighters with bomb loads for the first time in Naval History, and it was also from Princeton's deck that the torpedo strike against the Hwachon Dam complex in central Korea was launched. h Hx xx x x xx ,xxh ifvsee Y It X . l I :H 'T 2' Xxs S , x 'XM A 4 .x 'V XX L KX -Rx RX g-K S X N 'X' X. As this familiar phrase is heard over the IMC and PRINCETON once again leaves port for the open sea the Navigation Department begins its many and varied duties. The Navigator, with his assistant and quartermasters, is responsible for providing information to the Captain which will get the ship safely to her destination. To accomplish their assigned mission, the men of the Navigation Department must be proficient in the use of many, varied equip- ments. The proper use of this equipment allows the Navigation Team to fix the position of the ship at any given moment. The foremost task of the Department's five divisions is the collection, evaluation and dissemination of combat and operational information. The Combat Information Center, manned by OI Division, is in charge of collecting, displaying and evaluating combat information. In addition, CIC aids in the safe navigation of the ship. V The personnel of OE Division, under the Electronics Material Officer, are charged with the task of maintaining all the complex radar and communication equipment necessary for the accomplishment of PRINCETON's mission. OCS Division mans the signalbridge. Known as signalmen, these personnel are charged with maintaining visual communications with other ships and shore facilities. The men of OR Division are the radiomen of the ship. They operate all the advanced communication equipment aboard. To them is entrusted the responsibility of maintaining commimications between the ship and other naval commands. The Ship's meteorological and photographic services are provided by the men of OS Division. Within this division are weathermen who must analyze weather data and prepare weatherforecasts. The photographers must be everywhere at once, making sure of capturing all events of significance concerning PRINCETON, The Operations Office Staff are also members of the OS Division and keep the ever-necessary flow of paper work going smoothly. These five divisions, manned by highly-trained personnel, perform many of the tasks which are essential to PRINCETON's mission. The attack was launched simultaneously from the USS ALAMO and USS PICKAWAY in Mike boats and from PRINCETON in helos. Twelve hundred Marines poured ashore and began se- curing the Rung Sat Special Zone which guards the river approaches to Saigon. The Long Tau River is the only waterway into Saigon large enough to handle deep draft commercial and military ships. The overall objective of Operation J ACKSTAY way to clear the Viet Cong from this area and, thus, prevent future attacks on friendly shipping going to Saigon. JACKSTAY was successfully concluded on April 6 and, up to that time, it was the far- thest south U.S. troops had been since the be- ginning of the Viet Nam War. Intelligence reports reaching the Amphib Ready Group had indicated a sus- pected Viet Cong concentration in the area. As a consequence, Marine Battalion Landing Team 1X5 was landed by helicopter and surface craft--and Osage was on its Way. The primary mission of the operation was to conduct reconnaissance in force to determine the strength and extent of VC forces and activity. A secondary ob- jective was to protect friendly Vietnamese rice farmers, who were harvesting their crops, from Viet Cong harassment. . The successfully prosecuted, four-day operation was terminated on Mayl. Results indicated that a considerable amount of intelligence data and enemy supplies had been captured. The assault ships Alamo and Pickaway put troops and equipment on the beach, while Princeton's Marine helicopters not only landed troops behind enemy coastal positions but flew night and day in support of operations ashore. Upon completion of Deck House I on June 27, Princeton and the other units of the Amphib Ready Group entered into Operation Nathan Hale being conducted by the U.S. Army's lst Cavalry Division just south of the amphibious objective area.
