If the men of Gunnery pride themselves on being the areal sailors aboard, the salty dogs, it is because their Work most resembles the tasks seamen have performed for centuries. The men from the 3 deck divisions have quite a number of jobs. They're busy at underway replenishments, handling Winches, lines, and fueling hoses. They tie the ship to a pier, anchor or moor her. They are the boatswain mates of the watch, helmsmen, lookouts and coxswains. They may be dis- tinguished by a knife at their hips, a boatsWain's pipe in their pockets, multi- tattooed arms and often a paint brush in their hand. Two other divisions have the technicians of this department. The gunners mates keep the 5 f38's in top working condition and look after the armory and magazines. Fire control technicians make sure that the directors lock on to target with the right gun, with the right fire solution plotted, at the right time and at the right place. For this they operate fire control radars and analog computers. A No matter how modern or diverse the Navy and her ships may become, there will always be needed the traditional seamen, the men who handle such equipment as the block and tackle of a ship and keep her guns blazing like a Man 0' War should.
