FIRST PRINCETON Named for the home town of Captain Stockton, USN, who supervised all construction. Built in Philadelphia in 1842 and was the first screw steam war vessel ever built. In addition to her steam engines she was ship rigged, spreading 14,413 feet of canvas. One of the iron guns was called the 4'Peace- makern which later exploded, killing five persons, more notable of which were Abel P. Upshure, Secretary of State, and honorable Thomas W. Gilmer, Secretary of Navy. Was active in operations against Mexico during Mexican War then operated in the Mediterranean 'until 1849 when she was surveyed. SECOND PRINCETON By this time Captain Stockton was a member of the Senate, and primarily through his efforts, the second Princeton was rebuilt in the Boston Yard from timber and parts from the Original Princeton. She was launched in 18515 was Clipperbuilt and used new boilers and propeller but using the same engines from the first Princeton. She was fitted out for duty as one of Perry's Squadron in the East Indies but serious boiler trouble kept her from ever deploying. Operated in and around East Coast, Gulf of Mexico and West Indies until 1857 when she was taken to Philadelphia where she was used as a receiving ship. She was sold for scrap in 1886. She was commissioned as CV-37 on 18 November 1945 and was christened by Mrs. Harold Dodds, wife of the President of Princeton University. Princeton was de- commissioned in ,Iune 1949 and was re- commissioned as CVA-37, an attack carrier, in August 1950, becoming the first capital ship to be activated from the Reserve fleet during the Korean conflict. She had the distinction of going into combat with more than 7529 of her crew being reservists .recalled from civilian life to active duty
