Suddenly through the 1 lVlC rings the familiar alert: 'CF light quarters, flight quarters, man all flight quarter stations. The still scene becomes a panorama of motion as the flight deck comes alive with pilots, phone talkers, LSE's, crash crews, and many others. A signal is given . . . engines are started . . . thumbs up . . . and rotors begin slicing the air a few feet above the LSE's. Under the watchful eye of Pri Fly the embarked troops snake their way from hatches and into the awaiting aircraft. At a green flash from rotary beacon lights, the LSE's wave off the helos 1 by 1.' This is the mission of the Air Department+to launch and recover helicopters for the support of an am- phibious assault. To accomplish this, its 4 divisions of marines and sailors lend their skills and a helping hand to embarked squadrons for the proper upkeep, careful fueling, and precision maintenance of the heli- copters. The work of the Air Department is known by all. Familiar are the sights of hangar deck plane-pushing, of the arm-waving LSE,s, the hovering angel, and even the chugging forklifts. There are sounds all its own: the whine and whirr of an elevator siren, the bos'n's flight quarters, flight quarters, commands from the Bullhorn and the roar of 16 choppers. Its colors: the green of a helicopter, the orange' of flight suits, the yellows, greens, reds, and blues of flight deck jerseys, and the deck lights of night ops. Every department of PRINCETON is indispensable to an amphibious assault ship, but the Air Department takes pride in being the department most vitally concerned with the very mission of the ship-vertical en- velopment.
