J. H. Boyum Captain USN Commanding Officer July 1963 Captain Boyum was born in Maui, Hawaii. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, in June 1940. Following a tour aboard the USS Northampton, he was ordered to Flight Training at NAS, Pensacola, and was designated a Naval Aviator in May 1943. His first aviation duty was in night fighters. In 1944 he commanded the first night fighter unit aboard the USS Wasp and was credited with destroying 2 Japanese planes at night. Following World War H, he served in several night fighter training units. He later attended the second Test Pilot School class at NAS, Patuxent River, Md. After graduation, he served as the Chief Project Officer, Tactical Test. In 1951 he returned to night fighters as Operations Officer, Composite Squadron 4. ln 1954 he became Director, Test Pilot Training, at NAS, Patuxent River, Md. Following this tour, in June 1956, he assumed command of Carrier Air Group 2, embarked in the USS Shangri La. From July 1957 to June 1959 he served as Operations Officer on the Staff, Commander Carrier Division 5. After a tour with the Bureau of Naval Weapons, as Director, Strike Warfare Programs, he assumed command of the USS Pine Island in June 1962. In April 1963 he was detached with orders to assume command of the USS PRINCETON CLPH-55. 1 Captain Boyum has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Victory Medal, and the following campaign medals: American Defense fFleet Starj, Pacific Theatre Q6 starsj, American Theatre, Philippine Liberation, and the National Defense Service. Mrs. Boyum is the former Miss Jacqueline Frances Michael of Annapolis, Md. With their 3 children, they live in Coronado, California.

R. E. DIMMITT CDR USN Executive Officer March 1962 March 1963 Born in Los Angeles, California, Commander Dimmitt completed two years at the San Bernardino Valley College entering the naval service at NRAB, Long Beach, 26 F ebrdary 1941, with theufirst group of CAA trained personnel to he inducted for evaluation of an accelerated flight training program. Completing flight training at Jacksonville, Florida, in October 1941, he was assigned to VP-14 in Kaneohe, Hawaii. This PBY squadron deployed to the South Pacific where he was shot down by the Japanese. Later this Squadron retrained in PB4Y-1 aircraft and deployed again to the South Pacific. Upon completion of this tour he joined the PB4Y training unit at San Diego later moving with it to Hutchinson, Kansas, and still later to Whiting Field, Florida. In 1947, he was assigned to VR-8 in Honolulu, Hawaii, transferring later to VRU-1 QVR- 211 serving as Operations Officer. After a year in Line School, Monterey, California, he spent a tour as the head of the Aircraft Structures Section, Bureau of Aeronautics. In 1953, he got his first shipboard duty with MSTS as OPSXNAV of the USS Cape Esperance QTCVF.-88j. As Operations Officer of VP-9 fP2Vj in 1955 he got his first taste of Alaskan flying. From there, he was assigned as Air Officer of the Naval Air Ordnance Test Section, Chincoteague, Virginia, where he became jet qualified. In 1959, he took over as XO of VP-1 QPZVJ and fleeted up to CO. Here again, he deploye-d to the Alaskan area. In June 1961, he took over as Navigator, USS Princeton, moving up to XO in March 1962. Commander Dimmitt was detached from PRINCETON on 13-March 1963 with orders to report to BUWEPS Fleet Support Representative, NAS, Pensacola, Florida. He holds theiDistinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, 'World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Serv- ice Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. Mrs. Dimmitt is the former Kathryn Orr of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With their 2 children, they cur- rently make their home at NAS, Pensacola, Florida.
