R. H. Smith Captain USN Commanding Officer May 1962 - May 1963 Born in Lebanon, Pa., Captain Smith was a member of the class of 1939 at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. Following a tour in the Gunnery Dept of the USS Colorado, he underwent Flight Training in Pensacola, Fla., and was designated a Naval Aviator in April 1942. He served with VP-94 in Brazil and later commanded VS-40 in Cuba. ln November of 1944, Captain Smith assumed command of Night Tor- pedo Squadron 91, which formed in Quonset Point and deployed to the Pacific war area aboard the Bonny Dick , the USS Bon Homme Richard. After World War 11, the Captain served with the VA Design Branch of Bureau of Aeronautics, staff of COMOPDEVFOR and then with the office of Chief of Naval Operations. He was later Operations Officer of the USS Sicily, Commander Carrier Air Group 15, on the staff of Commander Fleet Air Alameda, and Executive Officer of NAS, Jacksonville, Fla. In 1958 he assumed command of VFQAWJ-4. Following this tour he was the Bureau of Naval Weapons Representative for contractual matters at Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, Long Island, New York. He next assumed command of the USS Hyades which is a SERVLANT ship providing services to the Sixth Fleet in the uMed. On 31 May 1961 he took command of the Amphibious Assault Ship, Princeton. Captain Smith was detached on 10 July 1963 with orders to report to Commander, Operational Test and Evaluation Force in Norfolk, Va., as chief of staff and aide. Captain Smith is a graduate of the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. He holds the Dis- tinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Victory Medal and the following campaign medals: Ameri- can Defense fFleet Starj, Asiatic Theatre Q2 Starsj, United Nations Defense, Korean Service, American Theatre, Navy Occupation Service and European Theatre. Mrs. Smith is the former Miss Sue Lenow of Ft. Benning, Ga. With their 4 children, they currently make their home in Long Island, New York.

J. H. Boyum Captain USN Commanding Officer July 1963 Captain Boyum was born in Maui, Hawaii. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, in June 1940. Following a tour aboard the USS Northampton, he was ordered to Flight Training at NAS, Pensacola, and was designated a Naval Aviator in May 1943. His first aviation duty was in night fighters. In 1944 he commanded the first night fighter unit aboard the USS Wasp and was credited with destroying 2 Japanese planes at night. Following World War H, he served in several night fighter training units. He later attended the second Test Pilot School class at NAS, Patuxent River, Md. After graduation, he served as the Chief Project Officer, Tactical Test. In 1951 he returned to night fighters as Operations Officer, Composite Squadron 4. ln 1954 he became Director, Test Pilot Training, at NAS, Patuxent River, Md. Following this tour, in June 1956, he assumed command of Carrier Air Group 2, embarked in the USS Shangri La. From July 1957 to June 1959 he served as Operations Officer on the Staff, Commander Carrier Division 5. After a tour with the Bureau of Naval Weapons, as Director, Strike Warfare Programs, he assumed command of the USS Pine Island in June 1962. In April 1963 he was detached with orders to assume command of the USS PRINCETON CLPH-55. 1 Captain Boyum has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Victory Medal, and the following campaign medals: American Defense fFleet Starj, Pacific Theatre Q6 starsj, American Theatre, Philippine Liberation, and the National Defense Service. Mrs. Boyum is the former Miss Jacqueline Frances Michael of Annapolis, Md. With their 3 children, they live in Coronado, California.
