X , . llfirst Princeton Named for the home town of Captain Stockton, USN, who supervised -all construction. Built in Philadelphia in 1842 and was the first screw steam war vessel ever built. ln addi- tion to her steam engines she was ship rigged, spreading 14,413 feet of canvas. One of the iron guns was called the Peacemaker which later exploded, killing five persons, more notable of which were Abel P. Upshure, Secretary of State, and Honorable Thomas W. C-ilmer, Secretary of Navy. Was active in operations against Mexico during Mexican War then operated in the Mediterranean until 1849 when she was surveyed. Saconb flrinceton By this time Captain Stockton was a member of the Senate, and primarily through his efforts, the second Princeton was rebuilt in the Boston Yard from timber and parts from the Oiginal Princeton. She -was launched in 18513 was Clipper- built and used new boilers and propeller but using the same engines from the first Princeton. She was fitted out for duty as one of 'Perry's Squadron in the East lndies but serious boiler trouble kept her from ever deploying. Operated in and around East Coast, Gulf of Mexico and West Indies until 1857 when she was taken to Philadelphia where she was used as a receiv- ing ship. Upon her launching, she was again chris- tened by Mrs. Harold Dodds, wife of the President of Princeton University. Desig- nated CV-37 when commis- sioned, she was re-designated CVS-37 in 1956 and in April 1959 she wasdesignated LPH-5. Present Princeton was in Reserve and out of commis- sion when the Korean conflict broke and she was the first

She had the distinction of going into combat with more than 75 of her crew being reservists re- called from civilian life to ac- tive duty, and her first air group aboard was a Reserve Air Croup from Seattle. lt was during Korea that PRINCETON catapults launched jet fighters with bomb loads for the FlRST time in Naval History, and it was also from PRlNCETON's deck that the torpedo strike against the Hwachon Dam complex in central Korea was launched. j M, Www A A r ',, uf 42 , . ,fi 5 if f mia- .f ff 1 j Sg.-Z Q 1 f X K WW? 'W' 5 324 , Z' 1 Eliifb flrincetun The third Princeton was a composite gunboat of 1,000 tons with six guns and was referred to as C-unboat Number 13. She was built in 1897 at Camden, New jersey and was commis- sioned one month after the outbreak of the war' with Spain. She saw immediate duty in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, sailing for the Philippines by way of Gibraltar and the Medi- terranean. She remained in the Philippines until 1903 when she reported back to the Pacific Coast for Operations. From 1911 to 1915 she was a station ship at Tutuila, then upon returning to San Francisco, she operated on the Pacific Coast until 1919 when she was sold. lltvuffli lbrinceton Named after the Revolutionary War Battle of Princeton and designated CVL-23. Built in Camden, New jerseyg com- missioned in 1943 and sponsored by Mrs, Harold Dodds, Wife of the President of Princeton University. Was one of nine ships converted to an aircraft carrier from a cruiser hull and saw almost continuous action in the Pacific until she was sunk duing the Battle for Leyte Gulf in October 1944. It was during this battle that Captain John Hoskins, who had just reported aboard as prospective commanding officer, was in- jured and lost the lower part of his right leg. Captain Hoskins was later to become the first Commanding Officer of the Present USS PRINCETON.
