I November 20, 1961 LPH-5 Buries ub Crew ,Il ' I E SUBIC BAY - An unusual 3, story of the Second World War was closed on Monday, November 20, 1961, with the I report of the rifle volley in the 51 Navy's traditional at-sea buri- v al. This ceremony 2' was held off the coast of Lu- 1 zon, Philippines Islands near 'll the spot where the illfated sub ' gl 4 was sunk nearly 20 years ago, on December 10, 1941. i The SEALION, the first American submarine to be sunk in WWII, fell prey to Japanese bombers in th eir initial sweep across the Paci- Afic. it 9, 1961 escuecl by Princeton PACIFIC PARKING LOT Hot Food Awaited Shipwrecked Mariners SKIPPERS CONFER NAHA CITY-On Monday October 9, 1961, the USS PRINCETON, a unit of the United States Pacific Seventh fleet, effected a dramatic double rescue on the tiny island of Kita Daito Jima. ' The PRINCETON received a distress call from the PIONEER MUSE, a 9,200-ton freighter of the United States Lines, early Monday morning, Shortly thereafter, the com- mander of the Seventh fleet ordered the PRINCETON and the USS TULARE to proceed with all dispatch to assist the PIONEER MUSE grounded in the heavy surf of the islet. Enroute to the island, PRINCETON was notified that the survivors of the SS SHEIK were still on the island. The PRINCETON and TULARE were directed to effect their rescue if possible and thus the mission assumed a double aspect. Exactly one week before, Monday Oct, 2nd, the SS SHEIK, a Lebanese merchant vessel of 7300 tons, ran aground on the same rocky shores. The SHEIK was caught in the center of Typhoon Tilda and driven off course by the savage seas. In the grounding her Captain and Engineering Officer lost their lives. When 60 miles from Kita Daito Jima, PRINCETON launched her helicopters. The survivors, 27 from the SHEIK and 57 from the PIONEER MUSE were found to be in ex- cellent health. They were flown to the PRINCETON where warm meals and clean beds awaited them.

No hostile invasion this, for the band was a musical one and its prin- cipal weapon was the bagpipe. For thirty minutes the Gurkha band entertained the PRINCETON's crew with i.ts skirling bag- pipes and precision drilling. Still, the sickle- shaped knives which hung from the belts of the marchers reminded all present that these men can fight as well as pipe. The Gurkha Band is a part of the 2nd battalion of the 7th Duke of Edinburgh's own Gurkha Rifles, an extremely select and highly respected unit of the British Army. The band is currently cruising with HMS BELFAST which, with the HMS LINCOLN, HMAS VAMPIRE and HMAS QUICK- MATCH recently completed a visit to the American Naval Base at Subic Bay, Repub- lic of the Philippines. The Gurkha Band performance was one of many events, both social and athletic, which brought together the crews of the HMS gCEIIiFAST and her host, the USS PRINCE- 'x xy X
