it 9, 1961 escuecl by Princeton PACIFIC PARKING LOT Hot Food Awaited Shipwrecked Mariners SKIPPERS CONFER NAHA CITY-On Monday October 9, 1961, the USS PRINCETON, a unit of the United States Pacific Seventh fleet, effected a dramatic double rescue on the tiny island of Kita Daito Jima. ' The PRINCETON received a distress call from the PIONEER MUSE, a 9,200-ton freighter of the United States Lines, early Monday morning, Shortly thereafter, the com- mander of the Seventh fleet ordered the PRINCETON and the USS TULARE to proceed with all dispatch to assist the PIONEER MUSE grounded in the heavy surf of the islet. Enroute to the island, PRINCETON was notified that the survivors of the SS SHEIK were still on the island. The PRINCETON and TULARE were directed to effect their rescue if possible and thus the mission assumed a double aspect. Exactly one week before, Monday Oct, 2nd, the SS SHEIK, a Lebanese merchant vessel of 7300 tons, ran aground on the same rocky shores. The SHEIK was caught in the center of Typhoon Tilda and driven off course by the savage seas. In the grounding her Captain and Engineering Officer lost their lives. When 60 miles from Kita Daito Jima, PRINCETON launched her helicopters. The survivors, 27 from the SHEIK and 57 from the PIONEER MUSE were found to be in ex- cellent health. They were flown to the PRINCETON where warm meals and clean beds awaited them.
