September 23, 1961 Jessel Entertain Princeton HONOLULU-Friday, September 22, was a big day from the entertainment stand point as comedian George Jessel pre- sented a one-hour show for the men aboard the amphibious assault ship, USS PRINCETON LPH-5. The theme of the show was Stars of Yesterday and Today. The idea for the show was conceived on the beach of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Mr. Jessel saw the PRINCETON operating and re- solved to do a show on his first flat-top. This show was one of the first performances on a six months farewell tour which will ring down the curtain on Mr. J esse1's glorious fifty years in show business. The grand old man was as good as always. Two of his songs in the Al Jolson manner, California, Here I Come and Toot Toot Tootsie Good-bye were a huge success. Along with Mr. J essel were female vocalists Rhea Vernon and Renee Aubry. A new male vocalist, Barry O'Hara, added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. Ben Oaklan, famous song writer, accom- panied with a piano. The PRINCETON is on a nine months' Far Eastern cruise and plans to join the U.S. Pacific Seventh Fleet shortly.
