Built in Philadelphia in 1842 and was the first screw steam war vessel ever built. ln addi- tion to her steam engines she was ship rigged, spreading 14,413 feet of canvas. One of the iron guns was called the Peacemaker which later exploded, killing five persons, more notable of which were Abel P. Upshure, Secretary of State, and Honorable Thomas W. C-ilmer, Secretary of Navy. Was active in operations against Mexico during Mexican War then operated in the Mediterranean until 1849 when she was surveyed. Saconb flrinceton By this time Captain Stockton was a member of the Senate, and primarily through his efforts, the second Princeton was rebuilt in the Boston Yard from timber and parts from the Oiginal Princeton. She -was launched in 18513 was Clipper- built and used new boilers and propeller but using the same engines from the first Princeton. She was fitted out for duty as one of 'Perry's Squadron in the East lndies but serious boiler trouble kept her from ever deploying. Operated in and around East Coast, Gulf of Mexico and West Indies until 1857 when she was taken to Philadelphia where she was used as a receiv- ing ship. She was sold for scrap in 1886. - ., - ,,.. 7- , . . , s .f , , if f f iid . - 3 , ff. ...X ff A ff, , 5, NK f . wk : fl, XXX? Upon her launching, she was again chris- tened by Mrs. Harold Dodds, wife of the President of Princeton University. Desig- nated CV-37 when commis- sioned, she was re-designated CVS-37 in 1956 and in April 1959 she wasdesignated LPH-5. Present Princeton was in Reserve and out of commis- sion when the Korean conflict broke and she was the first ll HER PREDECESSURS lbrinceton capital ship to be activated from the Reserve fleet. She had the distinction of going into combat with more than 75 of her crew being reservists re- called from civilian life to ac- tive duty, and her first air group aboard was a Reserve Air Croup from Seattle. lt was during Korea that PRINCETON catapults launched jet fighters with bomb loads for the FlRST time in Naval History, and it was also from PRlNCETON's deck that the torpedo strike against the Hwachon Dam complex in central Korea was launched. j M, Www A A r ',, uf 42 , . ,fi 5 if f mia- .f ff 1 j Sg.-Z Q 1 f X K WW? 'W' 5 324 , Z' 1 Eliifb flrincetun The third Princeton was a composite gunboat of 1,000 tons with six guns and was referred to as C-unboat Number 13. She was built in 1897 at Camden, New jersey and was commis- sioned one month after the outbreak of the war' with Spain. She saw immediate duty in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, sailing for the Philippines by way of Gibraltar and the Medi- terranean. She remained in the Philippines until 1903 when she reported back to the Pacific Coast for Operations. From 1911 to 1915 she was a station ship at Tutuila, then upon returning to San Francisco, she operated on the Pacific Coast until 1919 when she was sold. lltvuffli lbrinceton Named after the Revolutionary War Battle of Princeton and designated CVL-23. Built in Camden, New jerseyg com- missioned in 1943 and sponsored by Mrs, Harold Dodds, Wife of the President of Princeton University. Was one of nine ships converted to an aircraft carrier from a cruiser hull and saw almost continuous action in the Pacific until she was sunk duing the Battle for Leyte Gulf in October 1944. It was during this battle that Captain John Hoskins, who had just reported aboard as prospective commanding officer, was in- jured and lost the lower part of his right leg. Captain Hoskins was later to become the first Commanding Officer of the Present USS PRINCETON. PRINCETCN' The PRINCETON is an am- phibious assault carrier, desig- nated LPH, and as such, func- tions as a high-speed transport and launching platform for a battalion of Marines and their accompanying combat equip- ment. These troops may be used separately in commando type operations, or more likely, in support and augmentation of conventional amphibious forces. The technique used for such helicopter assaults has been aptly named Vertical Envelop- ment . lt's adoption to am- phibious operations resulted in the development of the PRIN- CETON and other amphibious assault carriers. What is Vertical Envelop- ment, and how is it used? The term is applied to the system of l a n d i n g assault troops against enemy held ter- ritories using helicopters as the ship-to-shore movement ve- hicles. What are the advantages of this technique? Firstg the fact that the Navy and Marines possess such a capability forces an enemy to disperse more widely, thus spreading his defense thinner. The shock effect of a helicop- ter landing is enormous and ideally should impose complete tactical surprise upon the de- fenders. Second: An enemy defend- ing a shore must prepare him- self to meet an attack from any direction, since vertical envelopment, as the name im- plies is not restricted by un- favorable beaches or surf con- ditions and may be employed rapidly in attacks on the enemy's rear or flank. This in effect greatly enlarges our tac- tical perimeter and completely eliminates the one front handicap resulting from a MISSION waterborne a ssa ult. The enemy defenders in the beach area are constantly confronted with the danger of complete encirclement and subsequent annihilation. Third, Targets such as bridges, light fortifications, and lines of communication, may be cap- tured rather than destroyed thus allowing our own use of these essential items in the push inland. In short, vertical envelop- ment with its inherent increase in speed, mobility and flex- ibility, adds a new dimension to the amphibious assault. Embarking helicopters, as- sault units and their air trans- portable weapons, equipment and supplies, the LPH is the key to projection by vertical envelopment into enemy-held territory. On these pages you will see this technique in ac- tion on the PRINCETON. x 5 . I 1 - :ix-lg. ., , M23 -A f .xqnv 1E A , V A f . F A w w W 1 w X . w 1 3 Q. The theme of the show was Stars of Yesterday and Today. The idea for the show was conceived on the beach of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Mr. Jessel saw the PRINCETON operating and re- solved to do a show on his first flat-top. This show was one of the first performances on a six months farewell tour which will ring down the curtain on Mr. J esse1's glorious fifty years in show business. The grand old man was as good as always. Two of his songs in the Al Jolson manner, California, Here I Come and Toot Toot Tootsie Good-bye were a huge success. Along with Mr. J essel were female vocalists Rhea Vernon and Renee Aubry. A new male vocalist, Barry O'Hara, added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. Ben Oaklan, famous song writer, accom- panied with a piano. The PRINCETON is on a nine months' Far Eastern cruise and plans to join the U.S. Pacific Seventh Fleet shortly. ' The PRINCETON received a distress call from the PIONEER MUSE, a 9,200-ton freighter of the United States Lines, early Monday morning, Shortly thereafter, the com- mander of the Seventh fleet ordered the PRINCETON and the USS TULARE to proceed with all dispatch to assist the PIONEER MUSE grounded in the heavy surf of the islet. Enroute to the island, PRINCETON was notified that the survivors of the SS SHEIK were still on the island. The PRINCETON and TULARE were directed to effect their rescue if possible and thus the mission assumed a double aspect. Exactly one week before, Monday Oct, 2nd, the SS SHEIK, a Lebanese merchant vessel of 7300 tons, ran aground on the same rocky shores. The SHEIK was caught in the center of Typhoon Tilda and driven off course by the savage seas. In the grounding her Captain and Engineering Officer lost their lives. When 60 miles from Kita Daito Jima, PRINCETON launched her helicopters. The survivors, 27 from the SHEIK and 57 from the PIONEER MUSE were found to be in ex- cellent health. They were flown to the PRINCETON where warm meals and clean beds awaited them. No hostile invasion this, for the band was a musical one and its prin- cipal weapon was the bagpipe. For thirty minutes the Gurkha band entertained the PRINCETON's crew with i.ts skirling bag- pipes and precision drilling. Still, the sickle- shaped knives which hung from the belts of the marchers reminded all present that these men can fight as well as pipe. The Gurkha Band is a part of the 2nd battalion of the 7th Duke of Edinburgh's own Gurkha Rifles, an extremely select and highly respected unit of the British Army. The band is currently cruising with HMS BELFAST which, with the HMS LINCOLN, HMAS VAMPIRE and HMAS QUICK- MATCH recently completed a visit to the American Naval Base at Subic Bay, Repub- lic of the Philippines. As we look back with a 'measure of pride at our accomplishments, we will never forget the forty- three boys and girls from St. Benedict's Orphanage in Din- alupihan, Bataan, Philippines. They spent Christmas Eve aboard PRINCETON, perform- ed, had dinner in the Crews' Mess, watched Santa land by Helo, received many gifts, and wormed their way into our hearts. Each successive Satur- day, the volunteer working pa rti es to the Dinalupihan Orphanage grew larger and larger. The enlisted men work- ing together on their own free time completely rewired the institution, repaired all broken furntiure, repained the interior of the building. Money was collected at the ship's church services to help meet the operational expenses of the school and buy such needed articles as food, clothing, an electric refrigerator, s ev eral electric irons, school supplies and toys. The 'Princeton was continually in the thick of ar- rangements for orphans par- ties, tours, donation of books, supplies and monies for less fortunate persons.
